CONROY

JAMES JOSEPH CONROY III "Jim"

On June 19, 2022, Jim died peacefully in Lexington, VA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth "Bette" Hammond Conroy; his son, Brian Conroy; his siblings: Bob Conroy, Mike Conroy, Joan Uhar, and Peggy Joseph. His sister Helen Mourra has since passed. Surviving are his children: Mary Conroy, Helen Conroy (Toby Cozart), Amy Conroy, Sarah Canatsey (Brian), and Emily Conroy; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, his sister Kathy Flanagan, and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was pleasant, kind, and a true gentleman. He was born on September 27, 1930, in Queens, NY, to James J. Conroy, Jr. and Helen (Smith) Conroy. His family moved to Falls Church, VA in 1943. He graduated from Western High School, then attended Dartmouth College and GWU, earning BA and LLB degrees. For over 50 years he had a general law practice in Fairfax, VA. He was also a Commissioner in Chancery for the Circuit Court of Fairfax County.

Jim joined the Fairfax Rotary Club in 1958 and was a dedicated member for over 60 years.

In 1952 Jim married Bette Hammond, and in 1957 moved to Oakton, VA. Jim and Bette loved to travel, especially to Europe. Throughout his life Jim was interested in literature, classical music, theater and the arts. He was a voracious reader of the daily newspaper, The New Yorker and books of all kinds. He was a good listener, always happy to engage in discussion and always willing to consider all sides of any issue. His kindness, respect for others, and delightful, pleasant nature are an inspiration to us all.

During the late 70's and early 80's I shared some office space with Jim and Betty in Fairfax near the old Fairfax Courthouse. After I moved from my home and practice we lost touch, but I will always remember their kindness and the good times we had sharing the space, as well as the times when I visited their home in Vienna prior to my leaving the area and their move to DC. Thank you so much for sharing this with me and know I will keep all of you in my prayers!

Thank you for letting me know about Jim today. He and Betty shared office space with me in downtown Fairfax for a number of years while he practiced law and I had a private practice in family counseling. I was about 15:years .so we lived and worked closely together for a few years before I moved out of the area. Unfortunately we lost touch but I will never forget them, as they were wonderful people and they were great friends! Jim and Betty and all the family will remain in my thoughts and prayers!
