Reid Bateman Obituary

Reid Boteler Bateman, a Baton Rouge native and life long resident, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 27, 2023 at the age of 61. An amazingly compassionate person, Reid used his incomparable wit and humor to bring people together. The joy and light he brought to everyone that knew and loved him has left a legacy of memories and stories that will long be told. Reid celebrated life daily and was always using his gifts and talents to help others particularly his family and friends. He never met a stranger and was a connector of all people. Reid had many accomplishments as he graduated Episcopal High School in 1980 where he still holds the school record in the 100 yard dash, a fact he boasted about regularly since the race is now measured in meters. He attended LSU and graduated Millsaps College and then earned his law degree from Loyola University School of Law. Reid served as law clerk for Judge Paul B Landry and then Judge William B Brown. In addition to his private law practice, Reid was an Administrative Law Judge for the state of Louisiana and a member of the Louisiana Bar Association. Additionally, Reid served on the Louisiana State University Dean's Advisory Council-Libraries. He was a founding member of the Monkey Business Party, a member of Le Cercle de Bacchus, Krewe of Achilles, and a member of the Gamma Iota chapter of Sigma Chi. Reid sat on the board of Big Buddy Program where he served as President and participated in the program's Dancing with the Stars event. He was most recently the 2023 Assistant Chairman of The Baton Rouge Assembly Ball and was Incoming Chairman. Reid had many hobbies and passions in life. Among them, he adored fowl hunting, loved all things Tom Jones and collected Marvel comic books. He loved Friday nights with his wife and crew at Marina's Mexican Grill, weekly visits to Dearman's and any excuse to hang out with family and friends. Reid is preceded in death by his parents, Dr and Mrs Ernest D Bateman (Sara Boteler). He is survived by his loving wife Ashley and daughter Rebecca, as well as his two siblings Leslie Bateman Brennan and her two children Sara (Andrew Trechsel) and Richard and Lauren Bateman Bailey (Lionel), and their three children Barrett (Alex), Suzanne and Brent. Reid was a connoisseur of vanilla ice cream, a Titanic aficionado, a history buff and prankster extraordinaire, but nothing meant more to him than his wife and daughter. They were the center of his universe, and he celebrated every moment with them whether watching movies at home or on one of their family trips. Their family life encompassed many friends whom Reid considered family. Everyone has a story to tell about Reid because he made such an effort with everyone in his life, and so we know Reid will live on through those he loved and those who love him. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 3 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at Greenoaks Funeral Home. Monday, December 4 at First Presbyterian Church, visitation will be held from 10:30-12, service at 12 and burial to follow. Memorial Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to The American Heart Association either by going online to www.heart.org or by mail to American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.

I am a former colleague of Reid´s from his time at the DAL. I live in NOLA & heard of his passing only yesterday at a reunion lunch with other former co-workers. I remember Reid as a kind & generous young man & valued co-worker. I know he will be missed. My sincere condolences to the family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Bateman family. I´ve known Reid since we were kids in middle school at Episcopal. This is not only a loss for his family and friends but the entire city of Baton Rouge. I don´t know anyone that has ever said a negative thing about Reid. He was a class act, a true professional, and I´m just sad that we lost touch as I moved away. Godspeed my friend, I know you´ll be winning races in Heaven!

To Reid, his family and his friends,
My sympathies to all as Reid was a great collaborator and competitor in grade school. He was a thrill to watch carry the football, cruise to the finish line on the 100 & 200 yard dash, and above all, have as our anchor on high school track relays ... and growing up in school. Wish I had been able to stay in closer contact over the years as I learn how Reid in his passing continued to be The Anchor to all who were blessed to know him.

Reid was a classmate of mine at Episcopal High. He was a guy that got along with everyone he met. He had a tremendous sense of humor and shared it freely and happily. I can honestly say he was a favorite of us all at EHS. I used to be amazed with his athleticism and his drive to be the best at everything he did. I will miss running in to you when visiting Baton Rouge, especially how we laughed about fun adventures. Rest in Peace my friend.

I can´t believe this awful news. Reid and I graduated Episcopal together. Like practically everyone else in Baton Rouge, his dad did my braces! Everything written in his obituary is true and then some. Reid had a gift for humor and for friendship, and for serving others. And I loved watching the man run; you wouldn´t think somebody that pigeon-toed could be so fast! My heartfelt condolences to Reid´s family and friends. Everyone who knew him will miss him dearly.

So sorry to learn of Reid's passing. We attended Episcopal together and every time we saw each other we would laugh about one of many incredible football runs. One in particular was he ran to the left on a sweep, encountered tacklers , changed course to the right, same thing, went left again (this went on and on) and finally wore the other team out and made a 50 yard TD. Time wise seemed like 10 minutes. I think of watching it frequently. It was amazing and entertaining. God bless.
