Gwendolyn Reid-Govia Obituary

Reid-Govia, Gwendolyn (Gwenie), - 67, of Millville, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on November 3, 2023. She was born April 17, 1956 in Atlantic City to the late Josephine Reid (Rice) and James (Jim) Reid Sr. Gwen was a lifelong Christian. She formerly was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Egg Harbor City. Later in life, she was a member of Newcombtown United Methodist Church in Millville, New Jersey. Over the years Gwen volunteered her time and services to community and faith-based organizations. Gwen was a graduate of the Pomona School system and Absegami High School. She loved school and was an exemplary student. She gained employment at Stockton College (University). Over the years she worked diligently to earn various college degrees (Bachelors and two Masters). Throughout her academic journey she achieved numerous academic awards, scholarships, and accolades. During her forty plus years of employment at Stockton she worked and supervised the university library circulation operations. She began her career as a part-time employee rising to the senior circulation supervisor. She took pride and loved her job. She served as a mentor, strived for excellence in herself and those that she supervised. Over the years she served on many college committees. Upon retirement from Stockton, she gained parttime employment as a librarian at Rowan College of South Jersey Library. Gwen also served as a Citizen-Soldier in the New Jersey Army National Guard. She was offered Officer Candidate School (OCS) prior to the end of her enlistment. Having an active military husband and two young sons, she chose to serve as a mother and wife to her family. In her after-work hours, she enjoyed sewing, taking care of her numerous plants and flowers, reading classical and contemporary literature and working on needle point projects. Gwen was an avid sports fan; the Eagles were her favorite sports team. She enjoyed watching television comedy entertainment, game shows, and the cowboy and the QVC shopping channels; Gwen couldn't pass up a good deal. She also enjoyed playing a wide assortment of memory games on her computer to maintain her mental acuity. Gwen had a quiet toughness and loving mother disposition. She had a very strong work ethic and a rock-solid love for her children and family. Gwen worked tirelessly to ensure that her sons Tony Jr. and Mark received a good education, with hopes that they would achieve their goals and aspirations. And when they had setbacks, difficulties and troubles in life, Gwen was always there to provide assistance, guidance and love. Gwen is survived by her loving husband Philip, aka Tony Sr., her two sons Tony Govia Jr. (Ada), Mark Govia (Crystal), her sisters Valerie Brown, Brenda Reid, Jeanine Reeves, Roxanne Reid and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her mother Josephine (Josie), Father James (Jim), and brother James Reid Jr. (Jimmy). She will sadly be missed by her family and friends.

I worked with Gwen at Stockton for nearly 40 years. A great, highly intelligent person. The world is a bit poorer now, and it is our loss. Always used to see Tony in the Media Center, surely he has grown into an excellent man.
