Marilyn McMaster Obituary

Marilyn Irene McMaster, 91, passed away on Nov. 2, 2023 in Anaheim, CA. She was born on July 24, 1932, in San Jose, CA, the oldest of 5 children to Felix & Irene Perkov. Marilyn grew up on an apricot orchard in Cupertino. She was talented & creative, and she excelled academically - recognized as the Salutatorian of her high school class.During her college years, Marilyn enjoyed traveling & snow skiing. She also served as President of the Panhellenic Board - the leadership body that oversaw the activities of all sororities on campus at San Jose State College. Marilyn's leadership style was characterized by her composure in action, always getting things done. She was optimistic, outgoing, fun, kind, & generous. Marilyn's passion for education led her to become a 4th-grade teacher before she married & had children. After her children were grown, she returned to the classroom as a favored long-term sub in the Long Beach Unified School District. On Aug. 3, 1957, Marilyn I. Perkov married Eugene M. McMaster at St. Joseph of Cupertino Church. For 66 years, they shared their faith, they created a home, they grew a business, they raised a family; leaving a legacy of making a difference for others. While her children attended St. Hedwig Catholic Elementary School, St. Joseph High School and St. John Bosco High School, she & Gene were active, contributing members of each of those school communities. An example of the imprint of their presence, their oldest child, Teresa, began in 1st grade at St. Hedwig in 1964 & their youngest, Marie, graduated from St. Hedwig in 1986 - 22 years. Consistency & community building are hallmarks of Marilyn's loving impact. Marilyn & Gene remain faithful parishioners to this day.Busy with 7 children, Marilyn did not often have free time. But she was known for her homemaking, (sewing/cooking) & for her passion for any game (bingo/pinochle). The McMasters ate dinner each night together at their dining table. Daily, Marilyn fed 9 family members + guests were always welcome. Multiple times over the years, Marilyn & Gene opened their home to families & friends. Marilyn had a knack for planning & executing family outings on a tight budget. The McMaster clan vacationed at Lake Mojave, camping in the summer sun on a chosen beach cove. Marilyn prepared & packed all food for the week ahead of time.Marilyn McMaster is survived by her husband Eugene, her sister Catherine Renteria + her 7 children, 20 grandchildren & 7 great-grandchildren.Memorial services will be held at St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Los Alamitos on Tues., Nov. 21, 2023. Rosary is at 9:30am followed by Mass at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Precious Life Shelter in her name.
