Spiros Gikas age 96 of New Milford, NJ died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, September 18, 2021. Born and raised in Glyna, Albania, Spiros relocated to Athens, Greece in his late teens and lived there until relocating to the United States in 1955. He settled with his family in New York City and married his wife of 56 years, Antonia. They moved to New Milford in 1974 to raise their family.
In his early career, Spiros worked in the Banquet Department for the Biltmore Hotel in New York City and later worked for the Sheraton Centre until his retirement in 1990. He was a steward of three parishes: St. Spyridon-NYC, St. John the Theologian-Tenafly and St. Nicholas-Wyckoff. He was a member of LOGOS. He was an active member of Anagenesis Society in NYC and the Pan-Epirotic Federation. He was an avid gardener and story teller.
Surviving are his devoted children; Rev. Basil C. Gikas and his wife, Presv. Sophia (Mindy); Christine and her husband, Dino Kostantakis. Spiros was the cherished grandfather of George, Victoria, Justin and Lillianna. He also leaves his sister, Anthoula Batzelis and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Antonia in 2013 and his sisters, Helen and Maria.
The Gikas Family will receive friends and family on Wednesday, September 22, from 4:00 until 8:00 PM (Trisagion Prayer offered at 7:00 PM) at The Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 23 at 10:00 AM at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 467 Grandview Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ. Interment will follow in the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Spiros' name to St. Nicholas Church in Wyckoff.
