Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Aug. 29, 2024.
Lemuel Edwin Martin, of Washington, Oklahoma, a proud patriot and loving family man, left this world on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on August 13, 1942 in Poquoson, Virgina. Lemuel was the cherished son of Fred Harten Martin and Florence Elizabeth (Diggs) Martin, both of whom preceded him in death. He was the third out of five children.
As a young man, Lemuel Edwin Martin answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army, serving in Vietnam where he worked in field artillery and reconnaissance. Rising to the rank of Sergeant, Lemuel's bravery and dedication were recognized when he received the Purple Heart and his Commendation Medal for his service. A true patriot, Lemuel thrived in the military, where he embraced the discipline, teamwork, and challenges that came with the job. His time in the Army deepened his love for his country and strengthened his character.
After being honorably discharged, Lemuel returned to Newport News Shipbuilding to resume his career as an electrician. He applied the values and leadership skills he had learned in the military to build a successful career. Later, Lemuel continued his journey by becoming a captain on a scallop boat working alongside his brother Ike and Harten Jr. Eventually, he moved to Oklahoma, where he resumed his career as an electrician at Tinker Air Force Base. He took great pride in his work, finding joy and satisfaction in a job he truly loved. Lemuel's dedication and hard work were evident throughout his career, which he continued until his well-deserved retirement.
Lemuel was never one to sit still, always filling his days with projects that kept him busy. He had a deep love for old vehicles and took immense pride in restoring them, dedicating countless hours to every detail. Whether he was working on his own classic cars or tinkering on other projects, Lemuel's hands were rarely idle. He loved sharing updates on his latest projects and was always eager to discuss his progress with loved ones. His passion for working with his hands led him to enjoy driving those restored cars, often with a bit of speed and a smile on his face. He loved spending time with his son working on cars, going to car shows, walking around looking at cool cars.
When he did take time to relax, Lemuel could often be found outdoors throwing a line in the water hoping to catch a fish or shooting one of his many guns. His love for the outdoors, open road and the thrill of driving fast was a testament to his adventurous spirit.
Lemuel is survived by his son, Lance Martin, and wife, Tamra, grandchildren, Kali Martin, and Ashten Kremer, Son-in-law Shade Kremer and great-grandchildren, Krew and Cooper Kremer. He also leaves behind his brother, Ike Martin and his wife Sue, and sister, Jane Martin-Matheny. He is remembered by his bonus son, Tony Jones, with whom he shared a special bond. Most of the time when Tony drove down the driveway past his house, he would receive a call, asking about his day, sharing his own plans for the day and talking about the weather. His wife, Penny, and their children, Emily Owens, JJ Jones, Megan Pryor and numerous other loved ones and friends.
He was also predeceased by his beloved wife, Susan Martin, and his brothers, Ronald Martin and Harten Martin Jr.
Above all else, Lemuel cherished his family, who were the true source of his pride and joy. He loved spending quality time with them, whether in person or through regular communication on the phone or Facebook, always making sure to stay connected with friends and family. He particularly enjoyed the time when Kali lived with him and looked forward to her visits. His frequent conversations with family were important to him, but the regular talks with his sister and brother were especially meaningful, reflecting the deep bond they shared.
As we honor the life of Lemuel Edwin Martin, we remember him for his strength, unwavering patriotism, and the unconditional love he had for his family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
