Charles T. Shontz, Jr. ("Chollie"), 86, formerly of Cinnaminson and Delran, NJ, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2022. He was born in Burlington, NJ to the late Charles and Stella Shontz.
Chollie was the beloved husband of the late Caroline R. Shontz (nee Windfelder) for over 59 years; loving father to Karen Hammon (Scott), C. Daniel Shontz, and T. Scott Shontz (Kiki); cherished grandfather to Kara, Kelly, Hannah, Lily, Brianna, Jaden, Zachary and the late Krystyna Caroline; dear brother to the late Delores Oliver.
After graduating from Palmyra high school, Chollie went to work for his father, later becoming the owner and operator of C. Shontz & Son, Excavating, Inc., for over 30 years. Recognized by his peers and customers for being a master of his trade, his commitment to the quality and integrity of his work was unwavering.
Following his successful self-employment career, he became a proud employee of the Maple Shade School District, serving the professional staff and students for a number of years, until fully retiring in 2018.
He was an avid musician. As a young man, he moonlighted as a session electric guitarist for bands across South Jersey. A self-taught piano player, he enjoyed playing for family holiday gatherings.
He was an inaugural 4th degree member in the Knights of Columbus, Council 1436 in Delran, NJ. He was an active member that often shared his time, talent and treasure in support of the hall and the community.
At six foot six inches, Chollie will be remembered as a "gentle giant" who stood tall not only in stature but also in his dedication to his faith, friends and family.
A gathering of friends and family will be held on Saturday, August 20th at Sacred Heart Church in Riverton, from 10-11:00am, with his mass beginning at 11:00am, followed by inurnment at St. Peter's Mausoleum in Riverside, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles's name may be made to the Knights of Columbus, 939 Bridgeboro St., Delran, NJ 08075. To share your favorite memories of Charles, please visit Givnish.com.
