Donald Reid Obituary

Donald Reid
04/16/1932 - 05/19/2025
Donald J. Reid, age 93, died peacefully at home in Houston, Texas after a brief illness.
Don grew up in the New York City area. A graduate of La Salle Military Academy on Long Island, he graduated from Fordham University, class of 1953. He served a two-year term in the Army as an artillery officer in Germany, and four years in the active Reserve acting as company commander and attaining the rank of Captain. Using the GI Bill, he earned an LLM from Columbia Law School. He also held an MBA and a Master's degree in Tax Law from NYU.
Don began his career with Price Waterhouse, later PwC, in New York City and then spent ten years in the Tampa office. He also worked for two years in the San Juan office before transferring to Houston where he headed the International Tax department. Don was admitted to partnership in Price Waterhouse in 1969 and retired in 1992. In his early retirement he taught a course in International Tax at Rice University, Baylor University, and at the University of Houston Clear Lake.
In retirement Don enjoyed Bridge, trivia and Spanish lessons. He also enjoyed travel and tracing his Irish ancestry. In his earlier years Don was a runner, a skier, and played tennis and golf. He took part in local 5K races tracing back to his high school and college days. His greatest pleasure and source of pride, however, was in the accomplishments of his four children and his seven grandchildren.
Beneath his quiet, private persona was a man of sterling character and iron will. He was kind, patient, generous and very adaptable. Always a gentleman, he was loved and admired by his immediate and extended family. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by Joanna, his wife of 58 years, his children and grandchildren: Elizabeth Reid (Bob Hrehor), Donald Reid (Martha), Christopher Reid (Shannon), and Marianne Reid Gildea (Terry), Celeste and Audrey Reid, Eamon and Ronan Gildea, and Ryan, Joaquin and Declan Reid. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Joan Jachetta, of Long Island, He was predeceased by his brother, Tom, and his sister Claire. A funeral Mass will be held August 7th at St. Vincent de Paul Church at 10:00 am followed by a Celebration of Life. A private interment will take place August 8th at Houston National Cemetery.
