Robert Morgan Obituary

Robert M. Morgan

April 9, 1951 – Oct. 18, 2023

GREEN VALLEY - Robert M. Morgan died unexpectedly on October 18, 2023, during a procedure to replace a heart valve.

Remembered for his loving kindness towards all, it is ironic that a heart procedure would take this loving person from us. Robert, more fondly known as Bob, Bobby, or Bobo, was born in Helena, MT on April 9, 1951, to Robert and Genevieve Morgan, the second of five children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his four siblings: Jeanne Ahmann, Tim (Colleen) Morgan, Tom (Jean) Morgan, all of Helena, and Sue Morgan (Dana Waters) of Seattle. He also leaves behind a husband, Carl Deitchman of Green Valley, AZ.

Bob attended Catholic schools in Helena, graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in social work, and earned a master's degree from the University of Oregon in public administration. He worked for the State of Montana, then Safeco Insurance in Seattle before returning to Helena where he opened his own store, Prickly Pear Antiques & Collectibles. His good friend Rob Mayer was his business partner and fellow antique hunter, a passion he shared with Rob and others the rest of his life.

Bob met his husband, Carl, in 2008, and they committed their lives to each other in 2010. In 2014, they were legally married in Spokane. Together they tried to live their lives by spiritual principles, first finding likeminded seekers in the Unitarian Universalist fellowship in Helena, then in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al Anon, and finally in mindfulness meditation groups, both in Helena and Green Valley. Bob held a strong belief in a power greater than himself, and grounded his living in the principles of kindness, compassion, and gratitude.

Bob collected dear friends the way he collected antiques. He held them close and cared for these relationships with solicitous love his whole life. Some friendships were lifelong, and others formed in the last few years.

Bob served the communities in which he lived. In Helena, he served on the board of the Lewis & Clark Library Foundation. In Green Valley, he was on the board of the Friends of the Library and volunteered weekly to work in their bookstore of donated books. It was his way of getting some retail therapy, which he missed when not working with antiques. Finally, one must mention Bob's love of sports, especially baseball... Mariner's baseball, to be exact. It's a love he shared with his family, and in a special way with his mom and sister Sue. He also loved college football and basketball. Many an evening he would be watching a game and texting Sue back and forth, commenting on good plays and bad calls.

A Celebration of Life for Bob will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at The Montana Club, 24 W 6th Ave., followed by a reception.

Memorials in Bob's name may be made to Montana Human Rights Network (mhrn.org) or the Lewis & Clark Library Foundation (lclibfoundation.org).

I am sorry for the loss of Bob for his loved ones. I had not thought of Bob for years, but for some reason googled his name tonight & found out he had died. I knew Bob in Seattle in the late `90´s. We met at the La Boheme tavern on Phinney Ridge. He was a great conversationalist & had a wonderful sense of humor, laugh & smile. As it turned out, Bob´s condo in Sodo was next to my work. So several times when Bob travelled, I house sit & cat sit for him. It was great... I could roll out of bed & be at my desk in 5 minutes! I remember how exciting he was to move back to Montana & open his store. I wish that in my many trips to visit my family in Bozeman & Billings over the years, that I had deterred a bit to visit Bob. A beautiful human being.

I was deeply saddened to learn about the unexpected passing of Bobo. It is a poignant irony that a heart procedure took away such a loving and kind-hearted individual from us. Robert, affectionately known as Bobo, left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to the principles of kindness, compassion, and gratitude, which he held dear. His commitment to his husband, Carl, and their shared journey in life was a beautiful example of love and devotion.

Robo's dedication to community service, from his involvement with organizations like the Lewis & Clark Library Foundation to his volunteering with the Friends of the Library, reflected his unwavering desire to make the world a better place. His collection of cherished friends, cultivated with unwavering love and care, is a testament to the beautiful connections he formed throughout his life. As we mourn his passing, let us celebrate the legacy of love and kindness that Robo leaves behind and find solace in the memories of the remarkable person he was. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends, and may they find strength and support in one another during this challenging time.

I will remember Bob's wonderful sense of humor and recall the several times we crossed paths in Seattle and on airplanes home to Helena for Christmas. The Class of '69 will remember him often.
