Lorraine Ward Obituary

Lorraine Marie (Wells) Ward, 87, a longtime resident of Great Barrington, Ma passed away peacefully on July 28, 2022. Lorraine was an only child, mother of seven, and wife to Donald Ward, Jr.

Born in Great Barrington on September 11, 1934 she was the daughter of Edward and Loretta (Whalen) Wells. She attended the local elementary and middle school and graduated from Searles High School in 1952. After graduating, Lorraine enrolled in St. Luke's Nursing School, Pittsfield, Ma by earning a scholarship from St. Peter's Parish. She worked at Fairview Hospital, which is where she met her husband, Donald. Lorraine and Donald married January 25, 1958 at St. Peter's Church.

Lorraine was a devoted member of the St. Peter's Parish throughout her life. This included being a eucharistic minister, taking care of the church linens, decorating the altar for holidays, teaching religious education, attending adoration faithfully and also attending mass daily either at St. Peter's or Marian Fathers. She brought communion to all of the local nursing homes in the area as well as visiting the sick and homebound.

She raised seven children and always attended every single school event. Once her children were grown, Lorraine returned to work part-time as a nurse for the next 20 years. She was a member of the Melvin Katz cooking club and delivered meals on wheels frequently. Lorraine was also a strong member of the Marian Fathers Divine Mercy prayer group for over 40 years. Within the Marian Fathers she helped set up monthly healing Masses and retreats at the Shrine in Stockbridge, MA.

Even though Lorraine lived her whole life in Great Barrington, she was an avid traveler and enjoyed visiting churches and attending pilgrimages internationally. She will always be remembered as putting her faith in God and love of family at the forefront of her life.

Lorraine (Wells) Ward is survived by sons Donald III (Claire), Gregory (Christine), Michael (Bridget), and Tim; daughters Maureen Barnaba (Anthony), Eileen Ward Fauci (Anthony), and Colleen Souza (Steven); grandchildren Lance Ward, Hannah Ward, Sam Ward (Meri), Nicole Ward Marques (Ryan), Eva Ward (Cale), Justin Ward, Ryan Ward, India Ward, Ciana Barnaba, Lydia Barnaba, Rosa Barnaba, Alyssa Souza, Maura Souza, Keira Souza, Olivia Ward, Isabella Fauci; great-grandchild Archie Marques.

Lorraine was predeceased by her husband Donald James Ward, Jr.

I JUST found out (on the day that Queen Elizabeth II passed away.) 2 months late that my mentor, Lorraine, had passed away As important a person that QE was it does not compare to losing the person that Lorraine Ward was while on this earth. I loved her and my biggest regret was losing sight and contact with her over the years. I will pray to her as in my opinion she was one of the most holiest and human women I have ever known. I KNOW she is bathing in God’s love and light and that God holds her as a modern day Saint!

One time when I was playing bass with Tim Ward's group, one of the featured performers hadn't shown up, a gig at the old Helsinki in Barrington. Tim's mom told me she was praying this musician would get there, moments later the famous jazz sax player arrived. She looked at me with this beautiful expression, and I believe is anyone ever had a direct channel for these kind of communications it was Mrs. Ward.

Lorraine and I were as close as sisters. Our husband's were partners at Ward's Nursery for eighteen years. Our husbands worked every day except Christmas and Easter so she and I literally raised our children with the help of each other. We became a big family together , celebrating Christmas and Easter together. We supported each other through tears and laughter. Believe me, she with seven children and me with five, we had to have a SENSE OF HUMOR in abundance. I was able to visit her the Friday before her passing. I said to her just think "soon you will see your mother, your dear husband but most of all Jesus . Then she said to me, "will I see you?". With a slight smile on my face I said I hope so , so be sure to look for me." with that I gave her a kiss and she returned my kiss. I said, ""I love you and she said, I love you too." I said goodbye my dear friend and held my tears until i left her room and walked down the hallway. A nice young man put his arm on my shoulder and said sometimes I cry too and led me to the front door to the outside. We had such a nice group of friends and all but three of us have gone to Heaven. Rest in peace my dear friend. I hope to see you in a far better place.

Dear Ward Family, I'm so sorry for the loss of your lovely mother. I didn't know her personally but was always struck by her kindness when she was in the nursery. She always had a smile for someone she didn't know and a sweet hello. Great Barrington has lost a friend but is better for her presence here.
