Ellen Lipshutz Obituary

Ellen Lipshutz, a resident of Horizon House, Seattle, WA, passed away peacefully in her sleep May 15, 2022. She was 93.

Ellen was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 27, 1929 to Samuel Charles Cutler and Sophie (Salle) Shapiro Cutler. She grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Erasmus High School. Ellen enrolled in Adelphi College, majored in psychology, graduated in 1950 and received a Masters in Education in 1970. For over 20 years she taught primary grades and was proud of helping establish the first program for the gifted in the Baldwin Schools.

Ellen and Ray were married on August 21, 1949. They lived in Brooklyn for a few years, where daughter Harris was born. They soon relocated to Freeport New York where son Robert was born.

Ellen and Ray built their dream retirement home in Arlington, Vermont, in 1982 where they entertained their children, grand-children and extended family and friends, old friends from Freeport and all new friends from southern Vermont. Ellen became very active in the Southern Vermont Arts Center and both the Arlington and Manchester Garden Clubs. She turned her hobbies in photography and calligraphy into a small business, showing in local galleries, libraries, the Southern Vermont Art Center and local craft fairs where her cards and photos sold. She was an active member of Israel Congregation of Manchester Vermont.

As Ray's health declined in the late 2000's, Ellen was a devoted caregiver. Ray passed away in 2014 and in 2017 Ellen moved to the Horizon House retirement community in Seattle to be near her daughter Harris and granddaughter Emma.

Ellen is survived by daughter Harris Levitt, son Robert Lipshutz (Nancy Wong), grandchildren Emma (Ken) Royer, David Lipshutz and Jesse (Melissa) Levitt, step-grandchildren Seth Swenson, Alison (Steven) Lee, great-grandchildren Fiora Levitt and Annabelle Royer and step-great-grandchildren Noah, Gabriel, and Raya Lee.

There will be a grave-side service at Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn NY at 2PM, May 25. The family will receive visitors at their Ellen and Ray's home in Arlington on May 27 and 28. Contributions should be made to the Southern Vermont Arts Center and Israel Congregation of Manchester Vermont.
