My deepest condolences to Lydia's family and friends. I met Lydia personally only twice, I think, separated by some 12 years, but on each occasion her warmth of personality and her generosity shone through. Her death is a great loss.

My sincere sympathies to you all. Lydia had a fierce mind and was a generous colleague. We had the occasional coffee while I was working at Vic, and she was both intellectually impressive and personally kind. She will be missed by many.

I did not know Lydia well, nor did I get to spend a lot of time with her. However, during the short time I did while at VUW she made a profound impact on me. She was a kind, strong, generous and deeply thoughtful scholar, woman and leader. Alofaaga e le mavae, ia manuia lou malaga, Lydia - you will live forever in the love of your family and friends, go well in your journey home.

Lydia was an inspiring and vigorous teacher whose sense of reading was large and who impressed upon her students the idea that life and art were vitally interconnected... a thrilling idea for a seventeen year old girl coming to her first university tutorial in English Literature. I am sorry she has left the room of learning. She will be much missed Kirsty Gunn, VUW 1978-80

I did not know Lydia very well but I know that my parents both knew her well from their time at Victoria (in their later years) and would want me to send her family and loved ones their deepest condolences, their admiration for Lydia as a wonderful friend and scholar, and their love. My father worked at the Stout Centre when researching his study of New Zealand prisoners of war in Turkey during WWI, and I know he greatly enjoyed working with Lydia. She was also one of my mother's favourite tutors and lecturers when she studied English, and my mother often spoke of her. Lydia is a huge loss to New Zealand's cultural and literary life but of course most of all to her whanau and to all those who loved her. My deepest sympathies; arohanui.
