Sally and I are sorry that we won't be in Wellington to celebrate Ralph's long and full life.

Ralph and my late Dad, Denys, his elder brother by a couple of years, were very close during their childhood in southern England. They remained close after the Second World War when Ralph took his ship to New Zealand to meet and marry Gwenda and to bring-up his family there. This was despite that the many miles that then separated them prevented frequent reunions.

Ralph was a warm, unassuming and generous spirited man; qualities that can no doubt be attested by his many friends all around the globe who met him through his scouting and radio Ham activities. It is no accident that this generosity of spirit is reflected in his family. New Zealand is lucky to have adopted and have been adopted by Ralph. It privilege to have known him and to be a part of his extended family.

I heard of Ralph's passing this morning from a fellow ham radio operator, Makoto Kamada in Kimitsu, Japan. "Mack" introduced me to Ralph during my sojourn in Japan in the 90's. Since that time, Ralph kept faithfully in touch by mail, email, Skype, and the rare ham radio contact. Like clockwork he would send magazines and his thoughts, following my family through moves and long periods of non-response. When our kids were born, Ralph was sure to send gifts all the way to the US from New Zealand! It is with great sadness that I regard the passing of this great man. He was effervescent and kind, and fastidiously considerate. Regards, Jonathan Haynes W0XO/7J1AWL
