Dear Chrissy, greetings to you and the members of Kevin's family. We were so shocked to hear of Kevin's sudden and untimely passing especially in light of his pending retirement. May God comfort you in your loss and shock, especially in light of the fact that you both were looking forward to retirement.
Kevin is the first of the cousins to pass on, and it is sobering to reflect on this fact.
Kevin comes from a great cultural heritage through his grandad Sydney Egmont Barr who we called "Gah Gah".Kevin has Te Atiawa iwi connections, Puketapu sub tribe- Hoewaka whanau of the Hua Division Bell Block-Taranaki. Kevin is descended from Mary Bishop a first settler at New Plymouth in 1842. She scandalized New Plymouth by marrying a "striking looking Maori man" called Wiremu Tutu Tehana, who had land at the Hua Village.Their child was Mere Tahana who married a Chinese man called Kum Sing. (They had a shop in Devon Street)They had a daughter called Minnie who married George Barr, Kevin's great grandfather and father of Sydney Egmont Barr, Kevins grandad.

The matriarch of our family was Granny Taylor and she kept us all together, the Barrs, the Millers and the Thorners. As cousins we recall the family outings to Trentham Transit Camp, when Kevin was born.Family gatherings at the house near Newtown Zoo in Wellington-times together at Queens Drive playing hide and seek among the chicken coops and hen houses at Lyall Bay-Uncle Johnny and the milk run and a host of other wonderful memories. Cherish and treasure all the memories and add to them as the days go by-greetings from Gerald and Shirley Thorner

To Chrissy and to members of Kevin's family and all my cousins greetings-Kia Ora. It was with great shock and sadness I learnt of Kevins passing.Blessings on you all at this tragic time. Its not fair that you and Kevin were deprived of a retirement. The matriarch of our family was Granny Taylor and she kept us all together. There were family parties at the Miller home in Trentham Transit Camp and also at the home near the Newtown Zoo and gatherings and the cousins all playing hide and seek in the chicken and hen houses in Queens Drive Lyall Bay. Kevin is the first of our cousins to die, and I am sure this is felt by all the cousins. Further back through Kevin's grandad-Sydney Egmont Barr(who we called "GarGar" that Kevin is connected to the Te Atiawa Iwi-the Puketapu Hapu(sub-tribe) and Hoewaka our family from the Hua Division Bell Block. Kevin is also descended from the first settler at New Plymouth called Mary Bishop who came to New Plymouth in 1842. She scandalized New Plymouth by marrying a "striking Maori man" called Wiremu Tutu Tehana. They had a child called Mere who married a Chinaman called Kumsing.
He had a shop in Devon Street. They had a daughter Minnie who was Kevin's great-grandmother who was also called Minnie Barr, who was Sydney Egmont Barr's mother.May Kevin be at peace knowing that he has a rich cultural heritage and connection.May God comfort all at this sad time.
