Des you were an inspiration and great leader to our medical profession, clarity of mind and expression of ideas which we have benefited on where people have listened and taken notice. I appreciated our time at the Devonport Naval Hospital and the benefits of your advice. Thank you. We are poorer without you and I trust others will step into your shoes. Charles

I met Des only in recent years but was struck by the clarity of his thinking and his powerful and persuasive expression of his views. His prescient opinions on Covid showed his foresight and deep understanding of the situation both from a medical perspective and from a broad perspective that was missing from the celebrity expert opinions.

It's a very sad time for all who knew this wonderful man. The world is a lesser place without Des in it. We can never thank him enough for the life changing help he gave to some of our family and friends as a result of his deep compassion, outstanding intellect and thorough knowledge of the practice of medicine. He was a true physician. We were privileged to know him and enjoy his unique wit and have special memories of time spent with him. Christine, our very deepest sympathy to you and your family for the loss of your unforgettable and outstanding husband, father and grandfather. May your memories help console you in the coming days.

I played rugby league with Des for University in about 1971. He was quiet and respectful and I remember him fondly. I received the rugby league photo from his whanau with details last weekend that he had passed. These days I live up north and had hoped to go to Auckland today to pay my respects. Unfortunately, I'm not great these days and was unable to travel from Ruakaka to farewell Des today. My respect and best wishes to his family. I wa indeed honored to share time with Des.

Ka tangi te titi,
ka tangi te kaka,
ka tangi hoki ahau
Ti hei wa mauri ora.

In memory of our `brother´
Des Gorman.
In his medical school days, Des organised many diving trips to Tutukaka and the Poor Knights. On those trips he always took the same charter launch which began a friendship with Eric and Mikki Wellington from Tutukaka, which lasted for the rest of their lives. Mum and Dad often referred to Des as their 3rd son. We had many great evenings with Des and Christine, playing trivial pursuit or the game of the day, laughing with Des´ very quick wit and crazy sense of humour and Christine´s intoxicating effervesence.
We will always cherish Des´ memory for the care he gave to our parents as they aged, for his personal love and medical expertise and for answering our Mum´s many questions. Des was our personal medical advisor and his korero to the nation when his advise was sought was reassuring and honest.
Ki te Rangatira ma, Moe mai, moe mai, moe mai ra. Arohanui.
To Christine, Anna, Sarah, Emily, and families, we love you. Always remember how happy Mum and Dad were that you enjoy your home in Tutukaka so much
From your `family´,friends and neighbours in Tutukaka, Erica, Phil, Gayle. Paulette, Carol and Keith. Love and care.

Sincere condolences to the family for your great loss.

Indeed New Zealand has lost a fine man who could speak with clarity , conviction, and clarity in the midst of the chaos and confusion of health issues . He could articulate wisdom and sanity . There have been few of his stature in the areas he sort to teach and guide.

We all mourn the loss.

I remember meeting Des at when he was teaching the Hyperbaric Medicine course at RNZNH in 1988. It was the most engaging course I have ever attended, full of humour and stories but with a deep understanding of the subject.
A great intellect and big personality. Much Aroha to Christine and the girls.
I'm sorry I am unable to attend the funeral to pay my last respects to a great man and doctor.

I only knew Prof' Des Gorman from his TV interviews.
But wanted to voice my gratitude to him/for him and to his family.
He was the much needed steady voice of reason with the ability to cut through any clutter and summarise the correct information.
He spoke with honesty, clarity and integrity.
His immense intelligence was clear to see, with great judgement and perspective on any situation.
I enjoyed his candour, caring nature, quick wit and smile.
I believe he most likely out thought many, but it was only his humility that showed.
N.Z has lost a truly great New Zealander with Des' passing. And I hope you don't mind that I wanted to express and acknowledge, mine, my family and many others I know, our heartfelt gratitude to and for the wonderful Prof' Des Gorman.
Sending sincere condolences to his family and those who knew him best.
With the greatest respect, Donna from Mt Maunganui.

To my brother and life-long friend of 40 years Des- "the light twin", thank you for the many happy life and work memories spent together across the world, enjoying time together above and underwater over the years. Thank you for your inspirational intellect, sense of humor, loyalty, and balanced perspective, all shall be missed dearly. Deepest condolences to Christine, Anna, Sarah and Emily and family whom he loved dearly and was blessed by the depth of your love in return.

John A. Holmes, a professor at Tufts, wrote a poem titled Death this Year which resonated with me decades ago . I believe that it encapsulates how difficult it is to process the passing of the handful of close and dear friends and family that we dearly love and are blessed with in our lives. Des Gorman was one such iconic human being.

I'd like to share it here:

Death this year

Death this year has taken men

Whose kind we shall not see again.

Pride and skill and friendliness,

Wrath and wisdom and delight,

Are shining still, but shining less,

And clouded to the common sight.

Time will show them clear again.

Time will give us other men

With names to write in burning gold

When they are great and we are old,

But these were royal-hearted, rare.

Memory keeps with loving care

Deeds they did and tales they told.

But living men are hard to spare.

Des Gorman was indeed royal-hearted and rare, and so very hard to spare.

Sincerely,

Drew Richardson , "the dark twin", and family

July 5, 2025

I'm so sorry to hear of Des's passing and my deepest condolences to Des's whanau. I had the privilege of working with him on a number of occasions over the years, the final time at Health Workforce New Zealand, until its disestablishment.
A true public servant will give free and frank advice without fear or favour, with courage and an honest commitment to serving the people and the government of the day. It involves working with integrity, giving the best advice, supported by the most solid evidence available. That requires courage and at times, personal sacrifice. As not many will stick their head above the parapet, especially when that advice may not always be what others want to hear. Des never faltered.
Des was brilliant, innovative, visionary and colourful. His knowledge and expertise of health workforce was second to none. As was his generosity of spirit and his commitment to growing and supporting others. He and his vision will be truly missed, but hopefully not lost. My thanks to a supportive mentor and a courageous public servant.

Whaia te iti kahurangi ki te tuohu koe he maunga teitei - Seek the treasure you value most dearly, if you bow your head - let it be before a lofty mountain.

Rest in peace Des.

I meet Des in Adelaide in 1987 at the Burnside Rugby Club. We formed a formidable partnership as the first grade coaches. Des always told the players how good he was as a player and me - well I´ll say no more about that.
So formidable was our coaching that we won everything we could however lost all 3 1st Grade Grand Finals we played in. As Des said - it was the players fault Kirkie not our coaching - hmmmm
Des was an outstanding man loved and respected by all the players and supporters.
I often talk about those days as if they were yesterday.
Thanks for the fun times and memories Des. They will live with me forever.
To Christine and the family be very very proud of your husband and father. He was a great man who I greatly regret losing contact with over the years. Des RIP coach.

Emeritus Professor Des Gorman (Ngati Kuri and Ngapuhi) was a titan in so many areas and a veteran with service in Royal Australian Navy as a submariner and navy diver. Neither are easy jobs.
