Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, Hugh and Shannon+Arthur (whom I never had a chance to meet),

You will not remember me but Tom and I were good friends when we were students at Charterhouse. A fellow student alerted me to Tom's tragic death around a week ago. I have not been able to obtain any telephone number or email address to contact you so I am hoping this reaches you in lieu of a proper letter.

I'm afraid I have had little contact with most of my contemporaries from that time for almost two decades, including Tom sadly. Despite this, I remember Tom as being one of my closest friends of that time. We were both more or less obsessed with BMX in our youth. I have since been swayed by other sports and hobbies but I understand he kept his enthusiasm as I suspected he would. He was a much more dedicated chap than I ever was.

As a friend, and shamefully I only realise this in hindsight, he was one of the most amusing, forgiving, encouraging, enthusiastic, kind and interesting of my school contemporaries I had the pleasure of meeting and I will miss his memory and mourn his loss.

My deepest sympathy and sorrow,

Hugo Jeffreys
