For your passion. And for spreading it, childlike, far and wide.
For helping others to see the world's magic through your eyes
While still being prepared to take a look at it through theirs.
For being endlessly interesting - and interested.
For being open-minded - but frank.
For inspiring and encouraging.
For your good humour. And wit.
For laughing at my quips. (Even when you slightly disapproved.)
For your patience. And poise.
For your originality and unpretentiousness.
For the awesome chats and debriefs.
For your trust, care and acceptance.
For the shoulder to cry on. (Though a stepladder would have been nice.)
For being you -
Thank you,
Wabi-sabi Simon.

I'm very sorry and saddened to hear of Simon's passing. My brother, Andy, and I went to Marist Wilton and St. Pats with Simon and his brother, Eammon (who was a real cricketing talent). I was a couple of years older than Simon, but remember him very well because he had a keen sense of humor, had such a nice nature about him, and was a very good tennis player and Andy and I would mix it up with him on the court. In 1991 or so he came through playing a tennis circuit on the east coast of the US, playing doubles with Anthony Adams, another great Wellington tennis player from back in those days. I was living and attending university in North Carolina at the time, so it was a great opportunity to spend a week with Simon and Anthony, catching up with them and watching them play. Sympathies and best wishes to the O'Shaugnessy family, and Rest In Peace Simon!

So very sorry to hear of Simon's passing. My thoughts are with his family and close friends as you come to terms with your loss. I met Simon when living in Ehime, Japan (1998-2000). Although we weren't in regular contact post 2000, I have the fondest memories of Simon; such a kind, gentle, talented and a deeply intelligently funny human being. Our mutual love of home movie making and a shared sense of humour but at the same time being able to have very deep and intelligent conversations. One of my favourite memories is captured in the photo attached; Christmas '99, and Simon in uncontrolled fits of laughter as the Brits in our group sung a drunken rendition of Candle in the Wind '97. Rest in peace Simon, I'm so grateful that our paths crossed. Steve

You will always be in our happiest and fondest memories of our time in Japan. There were hacky sack sessions, music, tennis, cherry blossom picnics, festivals, summer hangouts at the river, and just plain old doing nothing and being stupid together...
I can't begin to describe the profound loss and sadness we feel.
Rest in peace, dearest Simon.

I´m from Wisconsin, and was surprised to find Simon was a Packers fan. When we were in Japan, my father would send me videos of the games, which I would lend to Simon in return for books or videos from his collection. We kept this up for years, until he left Japan. When he did finally leave, he gave me a bunch of DVDs he wasn´t taking home. Still have some of those!

I work at Aro Video and Simon would come in on to take a film, or say hello on his way to get a coffee from Arocafe. He always enjoyed discussing films and music- what was playing over the stereo?; who it was?, and how I came to choose that particular artist/genre? Also what particular song He was playing in the car on his drive down-and the reasons for both!- sometimes very obscure but always entertaining--- I enjoyed those inane yet important conversations we would have, and I will miss them-and your company . Farewell my Friend.

We as the Tuesday nighters will always remember the joy he brought us / standing in awe of shots he produced on the tennis court those Tuesday nights .
Every time you hear the word Tweener think of Simon

It was with the greatest of sadness I heard Simon had died. I was visiting from Ireland in 2022. My daughter Catherine and her family were neighbours of Simon and his late uncle Frank. Simon and I shared many a chat. He was such a gentleman and very interesting to talk with and I am so glad our paths crossed. It was an honour to have known him. May he rest in peace.

I still can't believe he has gone. Reading through all the other memories they sum him up perfectly. His unique personality and surprisingly gifted ability with any sport. We had some fun times together at St Pats and beyond. RIP Simon, you will be missed, but in my thoughts frequently.

He loved film and always had a good recommendation when I ran into him at Aro Valley Video. I lost my brother last year and when I saw Simon shortly after he was kind, empathetic and supportive in his own quiet way. I reflect that kindness back to you. I will miss his kindness and grin.

I went to school with Simon at Marist Wilton and St Patricks College. He was a relaxed, witty and smart man and even better on a tennis court, where he seemed to make it look easy and enjoy running me all over the court. Years later I bumped into him again at Unity Book store in Wellington where he was working. Such a gentlemen. Very sad to hear of his passing and my condolences to his family. Rest in peace Simon.

Really really sad news. Simon was such a supportive, gentle, and kind soul who always made me feel welcome and was so easy to chat to. His warm energy was contagious, and I know Grandpop loved having him so close in Spiers St.
Love and hugs to all the fam - I know this must be an incredibly tough time and I wish I could be there to pay my respects. Rest in love Simon xx

Simon was such a wonderful friend and colleague. Working with him in the Flying Squad Team he always made our Team Meetings interesting and entertaining and he loved to share his knowledge in Japanese Sign Language and I am sure a lot of our Team mates would not forget the crocodile with the big teeth game he would bring to work meetings. He would also bring his guitar to work and play a song for the Team. Whenever I would see him around at work he is always would say hello and come over for a quick chat before heading off. He was such a great friend and colleague and will dearly missed. God be with you Simon until we meet again. Tofa Soifua, your friend Sadie.

I first met Simon at intermediate and then became friends at college. I have fond memories of playing touch rugby day in, day out during our 7th form year. Simon introduced me to a lot of new music and was always super enthusiastic and walked to the beat of his own drum. I haven't seen Simon in years, but was really saddened at his passing. My thoughts go to his family. RIP Simon.

Will miss the third form latin quotes, but not the drubbings in tennis, golf and most other sports. Rest in peace my friend and my heartfelt condolences and prayers to your family. So very saddened to hear of Simons passing, when he used to come to Huntleigh home to visit Renee he was always so bubbly and full of life and absolutely adored his mum, Unfortunately I am unable to attend the service Friday but will be thinking of you all, sending hugs to you all at this difficult time....

In the realm of courts, you danced and played,
A tennis maven, skills well displayed.
With every swing, you forged your name,
A player of spirit, boundless fame.
Beyond the lines, a journey untold,
Struggles and triumphs, stories unfold.
Through sweat and tears, you honed your might,
On the path to greatness, day and night.
In every rally, a glimpse of grace,
A passion for tennis, you'd embrace.
With every match, you sought to strive,
To leave your mark and to revive.
Your love for the game, a fervent fire,
A heart of a champion, soaring higher.
In memories of tweeners, your legacy lies,
A tennis player, who touched the skies.
Farewell, dear Simon, the game's your friend,
A spirit that soars, beyond the end.
May your journey continue, as you depart,
In the realm of legends, you'll forever impart.

Simon - you will be missed, my friend. It was a pleasure sharing parts of my life with you. Tuesday night tennis was our main contact. I know you enjoyed this immensely and I enjoyed the warm-up regime you kept to, skipping rope always packed in your tennis bag. Your tennis was always very good, and our group were constantly in awe of your "tweener". No one in Wellington tennis could hit those, like yourself.
Heart felt sympathies to all your family and friends.
I will miss having banter with you and your presence over "the net".
God bless mate and R.I.P, Simon.
