Sidney TURNER Obituary

TURNER, Sidney Edward:
NZ46031, RNZAF, J-FORCE 1947-48. Died 16 June 2018, aged 91 in the Village at the Park Retirement complex in Wellington, NZ. Loved Dad of Glen, Lesley and Russell, (with Mum Dorothy nee Lee). Father-in-law to Raewyn, Andrew and Lauren. Grandad of Kathryn, Perrin, Ben and Will. Brother of Audrey and Ian, Uncle of Vanessa, Debra, Craig, Jenny and Grant. Audrey, Sidney and Ian were born in Wellington to Ted Turner from Herts, England and Jean (nee Forbes) from Leith, Scotland. Sid trained as a carpenter/joiner with the Railways in Lower Hutt during the war. He then joined the RNZAF in 1947 and was the 14(F) Squadron carpenter in Japan at Bofu and Iwakuni with the F4U Corsairs of J-Force. Sid played football in Wellington and cricket for Eastbourne, and for the RNZAF. As a solo builder, he built many houses in Wellington, Maungaraki, Normandale and Totara Park from the 50's to the 70's. From the early 1980's Sid became a valued caretaker at the Hutt Central School and the Hutt Energy Board. He retired to Levin, following his love of horse racing and became a respected member of the Levin Bowls Club. In 2008, Sid moved back into Wellington to live in the Alexandra Rest Home. Late 2013 Sid transferred up the road to the Village at the Park Retirement complex dementia ward. He loved, and was much loved by the staff at both complexes, and our family sincerely thanks all nurses, caregivers and doctors who looked after Sid during these years. Sid died from complications with pneumonia, and a private cremation has now been completed. An extended family gathering for the interment of Sid and Ian will be held at the Karori Cemetery by October 2018.
