Ronald GRANT Obituary

GRANT, Ronald Douglas:
On 27 May 2022, Ronald Grant passed away peacefully in Christchurch, aged 94 years. A Civil Engineer, and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Ron was the District Commissioner of Works, Ministry of Works and Development, for Otago and Southland, and for Canterbury and Westland. He was also Chairman of the District Roads Boards, and a member of the Catchment Boards, in these regions. Towards the end of his Engineering career, Ron oversaw the regional restructuring and dissolution of the Ministry of Works. Amongst many engineering projects, Ron was involved in the planning and implementation of the Tauranga Wharf rebuild, the Main Trunk line railway bridge and underground station at Hamilton, the State Highway 5 Rununga Deviation, the Amuri, Maniototo and Waitaki Irrigation Schemes, and the Clyde Dam hydro electric power project – leading to the creation of Lake Dunstan. Over his career, Ron and the specialist MWD team contributed much to the development of major infrastructure projects, which New Zealand continues to benefit from today. Ron had a deep historical interest in the street tramways of New Zealand and was highly respected in the tramway preservation world both in New Zealand and globally. On his retirement, Ron focused on supporting the restoration of historical railways and tramways; and assisted, both locally and internationally, railway, tramway and steam historians with their research and in providing reference material for publication. Ron was happiest at home surrounded by music, his garden, his books and his family. Ron's wife, Nancy, passed away in March, 2022. He is survived by his children, Iain and Jennifer of Columbus, Ohio, Andrew and Hui Meng of Singapore, James and Lisa of Auckland, Penny and Simon of Lower Moutere and Jane Douglas of Auckland, and his devoted grandchildren, Jessica, Louie, Emily, Ella, Brianna, Olivia, Alex, Bridget and Charlotte. Special thanks to Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village and to Nurse Maude for the tremendous care they both provided. In celebration of Ron's life, a service will be held at St Barnabas Church, 143 Fendalton Road, Christchurch, on 13 June at 1.00pm. Ron's family welcome messages regarding your shared memories with Ron to: [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Tramway Historical Society (http://www.ferrymeadtramway.org.nz/).

A great loss to the Tramway fraternity in New Zealand. Ron possessed a detailed knowledge of trams and their history, especially those in Christchurch and his passing will be a great loss to us all.
His tramway colleagues in both New Zealand and Australian are saddened by his death and pass on their condolences to Ron's family.
