I deeply regret the sad news of Roger's death. In addition to his indisputable family and personal virtues, he was always a world reference in our scientific field. With great sympathy and human support, Roger always encouraged my work on Spanish Ordovician graptolites, and the trip he made to Spain in the 1990s to work together in western Andalusia gave me the opportunity to further strengthen our relationship, feeling very privileged for that. The great man and scientist that Roger was will always remain in my memory

I am very saddened to hear of Roger's death, even though I knew he was very ill. My deepest sympathies to his family and colleagues in Lower Hutt.
I first met Roger at VUW in early 1966, when I arrived in Wellington and, with Harold Wellman, I supervised Roger's PhD thesis on graptolites. I can only say what a distinguished career he had, and he was a really close friend. I have many treasured memories as we worked pretty closely for my years in Wellington: climbing Hailes Knob with Mike Johnston, collecting trilobites up the Paturau, trekking in to Aorangi Mine, staying at the VUW field station at Onekaka, showing Oliver Bulman round NW Nelson, the list goes on for a while. Farewell, a great geologist and friend.

I am so sorry to hear of Roger's passing. I did not know him well but I met him several time when I was a graduate student. At the time I was struck by how kind, supportive, and encouraging Roger was. My deepest condolences on your loss.

The world will be a lesser place without Roger's enthusiasm and enjoyment in life, a life he has embraced with such warmth and passion. He will be missed so much. Our love and sympathy to all the family. Celia and John
