Dear Lesley
So sad to learn of Rods passing
A true character in the Barry Crump mould
Always straight up and down with no grey areas with Rod , although at times one didn't know if he was being serious or throwing his dry wit about .
Loved his cricket and sport in general and we "enjoyed" many a lengthy debate about the merits of cricket and softball and what was the better of the two .

Dear Lesley My thoughts are with you on the very sad loss of your Dear Rod.I had the pleasure of meeting Rod while out marshalling and we got talking about cycling and who he could contact re joining the club. We did many marshalling stints together and always had a good old laugh. I was saddened when you told me he wasn't well and feel very sad to learn of his passing. May he rest in peace. Take care regards Gaelyn

Dear Lesley and family and the Griffiths Family.
Very saddened to hear of the passing of Rod. Have fond memories of him from school days and on the rugby and cricket fields. A very hollow feeling with his passing. Pleased we managed to see you both a couple of months ago.
Thinking of you and you have our thoughts on Thursday.
Sincere condulances

To Lesley and the Griffiths family,
Saddened to hear and read about the loss of your loving husband, father and grandfather. My sympathies are with you in your time of grief.
Prior to my retirement from the Department of Corrections I worked with Rod for over twenty years when he was employed as the Rimutaka Prison farm manager and grounds man.
Rod loved the outdoors and always gave of his best, often under the most trying of circumstances. He had a very forthright manner. To him a spade was a spade it was never a shovel. There were times when his directness upset those senior to him but he always gave an honest response to what was asked of him.
Our differences never compromised the respect that we had for each other. He was a good kiwi bloke.
Rod had a very positive work ethic and he went to great length to pass on his knowledge and skills to the Prisoners placed in his care. However, his efforts to assist prisoners towards their reintegration back into the community on their release from Prison was not always appreciated; for some employment on the farm or on the grounds was an opportunity to escape from custody and escape they did.
Death is a reminder to us all that life is but a finite period of time and we can only deal with the cards we have been given. We have to make the best of the opportunities that present and hopefully leave our world in a better place. Rod has led a full and active life. His recent suffering is now at an end. In knowing Rod our lives have been enriched and the memories of the good times with him will be cherished. May he rest in peace.
