BARBER, Peter Norman:
It is with great sadness that we report the sudden passing of Peter Norman Barber on 3 June 2022, aged 64. Peter was well-loved and widely respected. A memorial service will be held at St Andrew's on the Terrace, at 11.00am on Monday 13 June. Please note, that the family expect that all attendees will be fully vaccinated. Masks must be worn indoors at the venue. Live-streaming is available through the NZSO FaceBook page or live.nzso.co.nz

So sad to hear (only today) of the loss of Peter. Mary...my heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and the children...a huge loss in your lives.
A very special man. When Mum died he came to Linden to play the viola for Dad on the first Christmas without her. He was profoundly moved by that.
Thinking of you and the family Mary.

So sad to hear of Peter's untimely death; my sincere condolences to all the family. Today, All Souls' Day, I will light a candle for him at the Augustinian Church in Vienna - when at the Mozart Requiem high mass.

I remember how the Barber family helped my family when our mum went back to polytechnic to retrain. We went home from school with Peter & Mary until Mum finished "work" and Peter was particularly generous with his time to me, one year behind him at Karori School. I was fascinated and envious of all his toys. One year we were in the same class when there was a hybrid Standard 3/4 class. We went our separate ways at high school but our paths crossed when the National a orchestra came to Christchurch. Peter always seemed imperturbable. A thinker but with warmth. I am sure he will be missed by friends and family, but that we are all the richer for knowing Peter. Best wishes to his family. Mark Young, York, England

To Felix. Your perceptive and most sensitive eulogy of your father was quite extraordinary. Very few of us would be able to express who and what our parents are. It was deeply moving.
To Jacquie. What beautiful playing and especially with your aunt Mary. How very brave.
To James and partner. Warm congratulations for leading us through your thoughts and musical contribution.
And to Mary. My heart goes out to you.

Sending thoughts and love to Peter's family. We met when I first came to Wellington in 1996 through Bel Canto / Various TowerVoicesNZ and NZSO collaborations and Nota Bene choir and also connected with Mary through singing, and music teaching with children. Always interested in the latest news in my world and always up for a yarn and a laugh.
RIP Peter.

Dear Mary and family, Sincere condolences to you on your sad loss. I have good memories of Peter from the start of his orchestral career, first in the Schola Musica, then the National Youth Orchestra and the NZSO in which he played for over 40 years. I remember his calm temperament, his loyalty to the orchestra and his outstanding musical ability. Peter Averi, Former NZBC Concert Manager.

Deep sadness to learn of Peter´s passing. Sincere condolences to all the family.

Back in the beginning of the 1970´s, Peter and his mother Ruth would come and visit us in Waikanae. Ruth was a cosin of my dad, the late Frank Remfrey Bray. Peter would have been about 10 years older than I. In 1998, at my dads funeral, Peter and his sister Mary did a beautiful impromptue concert. This is forever in our memories. This was very much appreciated by our family. RIP dear cosin.

Mary, Jacqui, James and Felix
I am so sad to hear for Peter's sudden death.
I will miss seeing him cycling through town with his viola on his back on his way to work. I remember Mary once referring to him as Peter the Parsley Sower as he used to stride down Arcus Way scattering parsley seeds as he went. Love Kate and be strong

Very sad indeed that Peter should die so young. My deepest sympathy to Mary and family also to his sister Mary. Apart from the lovely music he made there is Peter's splendid carport he built at number 96 Waipapa Road which I walk by frequently and remember him. A friendly and gifted man.
