Paul Charles: CVO QSO
March 27, 1930 – July 16, 2022 Aged 92, died peacefully in Sydney, Australia. Son of Sir Charles Cotton, geologist, and Lady Cotton; Mary Josephine Cotton (née Gibbons). Paul married Gillian Perry Burrell (February 4th, 1932 – June 15th, 2021) from Feilding, NZ, in 1956. Paul attended Hutt Valley High School, Christs College, Victoria University, and the London School of Economics. Paul was a New Zealand public servant, diplomat, and journalist; joining the New Zealand Department of External Affairs in 1954. A gentleman of high intelligence, wit, humour, warmth, and generosity, Paul was devoted to his family, his country, and his friends, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Paul is survived by his sister Deirdre, her husband and family; his two sons and daughters-in-law, two grandsons, one granddaughter, and his two-year-old great-grandson.
