I met Ken when he, Hugh Middleton, and I shared a bench in the Stage 1 chemistry lab at Vic. He talked us into joining the Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club, and got me started on 'serious' tramping and climbing. We practised on rocks at Titahi Bay and Pencarrow, and went on to climbs in the Aoraki area.
Forever grateful for the introduction to the outdoors.

Ken's passing is a huge loss to so many people: Rosemary, his brothers, children, other relatives, friends and academia. He was my cousin and a good friend. The seven of us who joined the 1968 climbing expedition to the Peruvian Andes were so fortunate. Ken was out leader and inspiration. We were one of the most successful NZ expeditions ever to Peru and throughout Ken's caring leadership was outstanding. As a cousin I have communicated with him on a more personal family level and found him helpful, modest, caring and highly interested. Ken, Paul Green and I did many first ascents in the Andes and those vivid and nostalgic memories will stay with us forever.
My deepest condolences to Rosemary, Dan, Shannon, Colin, Merv and other family members I have never met.
