My most sincere condolences to Monica's family and loved ones.

I taught Monica Italian language and culture Victoria University. She was keen, bright and talented. Her solar presence in class was always a comfort and an inspiration to her teachers and her fellow students.

She didn't study just to pass her courses and a get a degree, but with the true passion of someone who saw value in learning and wanted to connect her studies to the real world. She engaged with the Italian community in Wellington and while still and undergraduate she wrote and directed a heartfelt play about Italian migrants to NZ.

I will always remember her: her kindness, her smile, her wonderful sense of fashion and her immense talent.

Thoughtful, empathetic, patient and kind. A wonderful soul from a beautiful family. My heart is with all of you during this difficult time.

Monica, we have only met a few times, but I won't forget the well deserved dressing down you and your sister gave me on the first occasion, but also how welcome I was made to feel. We spoke of our common interest in transport planning and then you surprised me with your Italian. Fair winds.

I'm so glad we got to know eachother while you were studying in Wellington. Our thoughts are with your family.

Beth, myself and our whole Porteous family send our love and prayers to your entire wonderful family at this most tragic and difficult time for you all. We feel most deeply for you, and trust in God's Mercy as you struggle with the passing of Monica. You were all front and centre of my mind this morning at Mass, which I offered especially for Monica. May God have mercy on her soul.

If there is anything that any of our family can do for you as you deal with these tragic events, please don't hesitate to ask. May God give peace to your soul, especially in the coming days.
