The last time my wife Shona and I were with Michael and Barbara was at a dinner at the Athfield´s with just the late great Ian and Clare a fairly short time before Barbara died.
These two greats in New Zealand architecture lamented during a happy evening that the young ones in architecture missed actual on site building experience and hand drawing skills.
The talk was broad and funny and we left feeling we were lucky to be with them.
We first met in 1974 when I was first elected to the City Council.
Michael had such high intelligence coupled with incomparable style and a generous personality....what a politician!
Barbara was the rock. Wonderful woman dear Anna and family.
On the Council we fought politically but never bitterly as was once acknowledged in an Evening Post editorial.
Attending those waterfront motor races in the late 80s Michael spotted us and kids and all later sat in the spa on the roof to watch the races very well catered for. This was on the hotel that later moved down the road on rails! Michael and Barbara were at the time living in the penthouse.
We used to meet and laugh when he was running his Tinakori Road art shop giving us his beautiful prints.
Great Wellingtonian.
Farewell Michael.....you added greatly to our lives...and may the family be consoled knowing he was a rather spectacular shooting star .... lightening the night sky.
Bill and Shona Jeffries.

Michael was such a fun person to have in my life. As Terence`s best man he kept the party going and he came and stayed with us in the house we built in Brookvale Road (with advice from our architect friend) and we found him installed, without warning, several times. I was flattered that he included the house in his "Country Houses" book. Our sympathy to Anna and Mark, I was a baby sitter! and come and see me in Waikanae. Much love Anna Peacock

As a former colleague of Wellington City Council I look back with pride at what was achieved during Michael's tenure as Mayor and the working together of a disparate bunch of people that achieved so much that makes Wellington the great and unique city it is today.
Micheal will be greatly missed by us all who knew him personally.
Sincere sympathy to Micheals family

Our sincere condolences to you all on the passing of your dear father. Many happy times were spent at our family home in Khandallah with both your parents. He was a very fine gentleman. May all the good memories you have get you through this difficult time.

Sir Michael lived across the hall from my mother Ellen. Always bright, with a smile on his face. He always greeted me whenever I visited Mum. My condolences to the wider Fowler family on your loss xx
