Michael BATLEY Obituary

25.8.1956 - 18.11.2023 Ngati Manipoto, Toa, Tama and Mutunga. Grandson of Rangirere Te Kapo and Riu Batley. Eldest son of Annie and Reg Batley. Survived by his partner Bronwen Stewart and children Alexandra and Felix Batley. Brother of Chris, David, Jason and Antony Batley and Jenny Sanson. A son, brother, husband, father, uncle. A life partner and friend to many. A proud Wellington Postie, a teacher, a fabricator, a health care worker. An original wit and a bon vivant. A prolific reader, a devotee of Youtube Music. A keen golfer but otherwise exercise averse, he could sing like an angel. Michael's heart failed him as predicted. Ill health wasn't his ambition and he left before suffering the worst of it. Michael was cremated on Wednesday 22nd November and the survivors of his life are invited to a remembrance on Sunday 3rd December at 2.00pm at the Boulcott Street Bistro, Boulcott Street, Wellington. Haere atu taku papa, ka tangi nga roimata mooku. Rere atu to wairua ki o matua e tatari ana mooku. Moe Mai Moe Mai Raa.

Michael,
You sent me this of us picture recently.
It was the time of the Anti-carpet and pétanque Mount Victoria Republic, the platform of which was to resist to the thickening of the carpets and play pétanque. We invented it the moment we met each other !
You, Rosemary, Alex and Felix were so welcoming in this house on the mount.
We saw each other then through time in Italy and France, with Bronwen.
As Bronwen just wrote, time didn't seems to matter. We shared some spirit.
I'm thinking of you often. I will miss you !
All good thoughts to Rosemary, Alex, Felix and Bronwen.

Mr Michael Batley. I smile at the memories of evenings at yours, including the first time meeting you and Bronwen and Edie. Bronwen being the only one who didn´t bark! What a strange and peculiar friendship ensued over four (feels like more?) years of intermittent visits. Conversations with you could go absolutely anywhere and sometimes back again. Always with a laugh, often educative, sometimes heated, commonly loud and lyrical.
You (and the girls) became one of the things I missed about Wellington. You made me feel like I was as interesting and worthy and clever as you were.
I am so pleased you all came to stay with us this year. A lovely punctuation mark in a weird and wonderful relationship. I am incredibly sad that it has turned out to be a full stop.
Bronwen and Edie, Felix, and Alex (I can´t recall if we actually met or if I just heard so much about you) I actually am sending thoughts and prayers, which I only wish Michael was here to discuss. Leigh

Bronwen, I'm sorry for your loss of Michael - although he had such a good run after all said and done. I'm thinking of you as I often do.
All my love and best wishes going forward. Judith (Parker-Bowles).
