I have just learned of Mark Davis death in April.Mark had a great way of making anyone feel valued. In our Polytechnic nursing student days of the 70s,I remember mopping the old outpatients at Wgtn Hospital at my Crothells cleaning job,Mark stopped had a brief chat holding up his colleagues then called back down the corridor keep up the good work'!At nurses reunion he had the same kind, cheerfulness and was great with names.Decades later I was needing professional help for a distressed teen needing urgent psych help for self harm.I left a message on Marks work phone, not expecting a reply as it was beginning of a long weekend. He rang back assisting me to get the youth into hospital. He was a devoted doctor. My deepest sympathy to you dear Sally-a nicer couple it would be hard to find.Gabriel.x

Mark was a psychiatrist when I was a house officer and later a GP registrar at Wainuiomata. He was highly respected and liked by all his colleagues, a very approachable and friendly consultant who was also a good teacher and mentor, and someone who would remember you years after last seeing him. We are all poorer for Mark's passing.

Mark was a deeply thoughtful, insightful, caring Balint colleague. He contributed enormously to his colleagues' professional development and on to their patients. I remember with fondness his great sense of humour and fun at the end of our Balint Leadership Intensives. I feel for and express my condolences to his family and friends. Frank Meumann

I remember Mark with affection, as a Balint group co-leader, as a fellow BSANZ Board member, as a member of the leadership group at Balint Intensives, and as a proud grandfather. My condolences to all the family

I am writing on behalf of the Balint Society of Australia and New Zealand. It is with deep regret and sadness we heard of Mark's death on 26th April.
Mark was a wonderful Balint group leader in Wellington for many years, and an enthusiastic supporter of the work.
He was a member of the Board of the Balint Society for several years, and an accredited Balint leader , supervisor and Balint leader trainer since 2010.
In this valuable work which supports doctors and other health practitioners he contributed his experience and wisdom to everyone with generosity and humour.
He co-led at a Balint weekend as recently as March 2020 in Auckland.
He was my own supervisor in my Balint leadership training and his support and guidance was invaluable to me.
He will be sadly missed in the Balint community.
Dr Di Nash
President, Balint Society of Australia and New Zealand.

I first met Mark as a junior doctor when he was our intern supervisor. He always had our best interests in the forefront of his mind and was always willing to lend a friendly ear.
Condolences to his family.

Dear Sally and family,
I first met Mark at Porirua Mental Hospital when he was my registrar and I his house surgeon. Neither of us were patients, although I became his patient later...They were wonderful times in the old system, some parts of which are sorely missed by some patients.
When I was a GP at Wainuiomata Health Centre Mark approached us to discuss him visiting Wainui to see our psychologically challenged patients there rather than their travelling over the hill to Hutt Hospital. This was a ground breaking development and he would see our patients then talk to us about a treatment plan.
I had the need to see Mark as a patient a couple of times, myself, and found his help and wisdom invaluable. I go to sleep every night listening to Ken Mellor's meditations,as suggested by Mark. Later he recommended Garry Cockburn, counsellor, to me which was a life-changing recommendation.
The greatest honour was to be invited by Mark to be a member of his Balint group another groundbreaking event for me. This and the Australian Balint Conference in Noosa are highlights in my life.
I feel so lucky to have known Mark and wish Sally and all their family my best wishes in dealing with the loss of such a great person. God speed Mark.
Trace Meech.

To the family of Dr Mark Davis.
I have known Mark since 1978, when he was a house surgeon and I was a medical student. We would catch up from time to time, usually at classical music concerts or medicolegal meetimgs, and I always enjoyed his wit and intelligence. He had a great passion for ethical treatment af all patients and he will be sadly missed. My apologies for nit attending the funeral but I am awayy for the next week. My deepest condolences and assurance that my thoughts are with you.
Graham Sharpe, anaesthetist.

My condolences to you on the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. Mark was my psychiatrist in the mid-late 1990's at Karori Medical Centre. He was kind, funny and empathetic. The day he told me I was an extrovert despite my full blown anxiety disorder is something I'll always carry with me. His insight empowered me to keep moving forward.

Treated me for 14 years starting from when I was a frightened 20 year old. Was never anything but deeply kind and compassionate. Huge respect for Mark and the work he did. He will never be forgotten.
