Maria Emilia (nee Gounelas):
Born in Sparta Greece, 26.2.1938, died peacefully Toronto Canada 1.2.2023. Beloved wife of Dr John G. Flannery, (deceased). Dearly loved mother and mother-in-law of Nereida Flannery, and James and Lynsey Flannery. Dearly loved Yiaya of grand- children, Maremilia, Sharkey and Jack. Loving sister and sister-in-law to Nikos, and Dimitrios and Ruth Gounelas (Greece). Loved and respected sister-in-law of James and Mary Flannery (London), and Michael and Enid Flannery (Wellington).
She brought the Greek sunlight into our lives .
A vivacious life well lived.

Dear Maria, in my first message for you, I forgot to thank whoever it was that placed the notice of your passing in the DomPost. If they had not done that, I would not have known that you were dead and could not have grieved for you. I´d lost contact with you again in 2016, and hadn´t seen you since our student days together at Victoria University of Wellington. I still have an office there.

Maria, my dear friend, I will always miss you. My sincerest condolences to your family, especially Nereida and James.
I was at the Paniyiri today, near the Community Centre and the new church. I remembered you at the old church
back in the 1960s, when we were students together at Victoria University of Wellington. I remember your wonderful smile and zest for life, your intelligence, your love of art and literature, the help you gave young female Greek immigrants, your loving and caring heart.
