I worked with Lewis Moeau for many years as Public Affairs Manager at Government House, where he served as kaumatua to Governors-General Sir Anand Satyanand, and Sir Jerry Mateparae. Lewis was a humble man of great mana, whose advice was always sought and always respected. He was a man who walked confidently in both the Maori and Pakeha worlds, representing and explaining tikanga Maori to everyone from visiting Heads of State, Royalty, Diplomats, Prime Ministers and Governors-General, to a pakeha speech writer such as myself attempting to carefully navigate through cultural and historical sensitivities. Lewis' knowledge of tikanga Maori and te reo Maori was legend. If he didn't know the answer to a question, he always knew someone who did. He had a great sense of humour and he didn't suffer fools either, regardless of their background. My sincere condolences are with his whanau and iwi, for whom he was a tireless worker in settling their Treaty claim. Kua hinga te totara i Te Waonui a Tane. A totara has fallen in the great forest of Tane.

Good Bye old Friend I will miss you along with our long conversations ranging from Politics to Sport.Your knowledge of Rugby both Union and League was amazing.
I also learnt a lot about Maori Culture which was sadly lacking in my Schooling.I regret that I did not take you up on your offer of lunch at TPK.
Rest in Peace.
