How to begin to say good-bye to my cousin Kevin? Growing up, he was the big brother I never had (and he was BIG). Kevin was a man of contradictions and I loved them all. He was a mountain of a man, yet gentle and full of kindness. Kevin loved adventure--from Alaska to New Zealand (everyone knows how he met Wendy--right?) --yet he loved family and home even more. Kevin played a lot while in college (I know because he let his freshman cousin join in), yet he devoured reading and learning. Family get-togethers (Grandma Boerman's basement) always included the cousins gathering together, piled on top of each other on furniture and spilling over into the floor. When the old slides (raise your hand if you know what these were) with photos of our parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts as children/young adults were shown, Kevin would chime in with the funniest commentary. We laughed until we couldn't breathe--Kevin's laughter booming even when we were children. While I could see all of my Boerman uncle's in Kevin---I especially saw Grandpa Boerman in him. Grandpa Boerman was the finest woodworker, a man who made furniture and build his family homes. Kevin always told me "Wood is Good" and anything you made yourself was of greatest value. And like Grandpa Boerman, he was interested in all people. Most of all, they were both kind men. I shared time with Kevin and our Grandma Boerman when he visited her in her late years---the love and kindness he showed her brought me to my knees. I smiled through tears when I heard that Kevin named his sons after two of the best humans ever--Grandpa Jacob Boerman and Uncle Daniel Boerman---who like Kevin, were great men, gone too soon.
To Wendy, Daniel and Jacob---our deepest sympathy as as you say goodbye, May memories of Kevin in the good days bring smiles through the tears. May you be comforted knowing that Kevin in no longer in pain and no longer held back by his earthly body. May your find peace in knowing that Kevin was loved and will be remembered across the globe.
(Kevin---my email address that you gave me so much grief about and told me to never change---remains the same [email protected])

Though we haven't seen each other in years, your presence is here with us. You were one of a kind, a good heart, a tough dude, an adventurer, a troublemaker, a kind soul. We have done some fun things together since grade school thru college..one could write a book.
You will be missed and our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy and the boys. So long buddy.
