Marty, we've only just heard the terribly sad news.
You will be so missed by us all at The Hive Bar in Sydney - although you'd made the jump to Indonesia we all expected to see you back from time time to time. And also to take the opportunity to catch up with you there.
Sadly not.
You will be so missed by us as a font of all knowledge, movie and music specialist, raconteur, drinker, and all round top bloke.
We all had a drink with you tonight :-) Sleep well.
All our love, David, Kate, Blake, Jess, Dan, Emma, Russ, Adam, Nikki, Nick, Ben, Gonzo xxx

A man of many talents - encyclopaedic knowledge, cryptic crossword solver, staunch unionist, lover of Indonesia and Asian food, proud father and a good colleague and friend. Many fun times shared at the Journos' Club. Vale Marty.

Marty Steele - a larger-than-life character, a big personality and a great friend and colleague on The Daily Telegraph in the 1980s. I'll raise a glass or two to the many good times spent in your company.

So sad to hear of Marty's passing. You were so welcoming when my wife and I arrived at The Telegraph (and Australia) in 1998. So many stories, so much fun to work alongside. You'll not be forgotten my friend.

the world of good grammar, punctuation and headline writing will be a poorer place with the passing of Marty. He was the only person who could keep George Beare and a passing procession of editors in check. Vale Marty Steele.

So many years, so many stories. We didn't always agree but he was a generous soul, a knowledgeable colleague and a fine drinking companion before his health went into decline. We'll miss him.
