John Mountain:
Passed peacefully on 25th September 2022, at age 81, at Riverleigh Rest Home. Born in St. Kilda, Dunedin, on 18 July 1941 to George and Annie Sutherland (nee Vernon), John spent his formative years in Wanaka before going to sea in his late twenties, which took him all over the world. John married dearly devoted Maria Sefo in 1967, and welcomed daughter Melissa in 1968, and son Louis in 1970. He was proud of his pioneering stock, his Scottish heritage, and the Sutherland clan motto "sans peur," which is how he lived his life - without fear. Philosopher, classical aficionado, storyteller, poet, artist, cosmos enthusiast, lifelong scholar, and the smartest person in any room, John was a complex, brilliant man who never failed to be interesting or to leave his mark on the world. He is survived by his loving family, including his children, and grandchildren Louis, Brooke, Cassandra, Ruby, Ives, Luca, Otis, Nellie, Evander, and great-grandson Marius.
