I worked with Jim for six months at ITPNZ. He was the kindest, most inspiring soul. He was an 'out of the box' thinker but also able to wrangle the large egos that were present in a room full of polytechnic CEOs. I will always be thankful for my time with Jim, he was one of the world's true gentlemen.

I am saddened to only just learn of Jim's passing. I have not lived in Wellington since 2009 and then mostly in Australia.
I had the pleasure of working with Jim for 17 years as his PA/Executive Secretary at APNZ/ITPNZ. Jim was a great boss! He encouraged and nurtured staff development and was was very generous with his time. I learnt so much from Jim and I will always be grateful for that.
When I started with APNZ in 1990 there were only two staff, Jim and Teresa. Jim was passionate about education and incredibly knowledgeable. Over the years APNZ grew to be a well respected lobby group for the Polytechnic/ITP sector and himself well respected by his peers.
Jim had a great sense of humour and every day there would be laughter from somewhere on the office floor. Many wonderful memories of staff lunches...so much laughter. He will be sadly missed by all of us.
To Joan and family I send my deepest sympathys and condolences also my thoughts are with you at this sad sad time. Big love and hugs to you all.
RIP Jim, you will be fondly remembered always...rest well.
Love Pauline

I was very saddened to hear of Jim's passing and pass on my condolences to his family. Our paths have crossed many times over the past 40 years, first when he was registrar at CIT and later through NZBED. He was always even-handed, very approachable, a great role model and will be sadly missed.

I worked for Jim at APNZ in the late 90´s. He was a great advocate for vocational education and worked hard to give the polytechnics a coherent voice (not always an easy task!). Working with Jim was one the highlights of my career. I learnt a huge amount from him and we had a lot of fun too.

I only know Jim through his role with the NZBED over the past few years. I found Jim to be a person who was approachable, had great vision and would have been a person I would have loved to have worked with and gotten to know better. He was a respected leader who and will be sorely missed. Best wishes and condolences to the Doyle family.

I got to know Jim when I was working in tertiary education policy some 25 years or more ago. At that stage he was Chief Executive of the Association of Polytechnics of New Zealand. It was a pleasure to run into him again in 2019 and 2020. Jim was very personable; cool, calm and collected at all times, and extremely knowledgeable. He will be missed. Best wishes to family and close friends. I will be tuned in to the live feed for the funeral as I am immunocompromised.

Deepest sympathies to Jim's family and friends. Always enjoyed our catchups at NZQA, and being the beneficiary of Jim's immense knowledge and wit. We both attended Newbridge College secondary school in Ireland, and Jim used to regale me with many great stories. Most of all I will miss his passion for vocational education.
RIP.

My thoughts and best wishes to Jim's loved ones and family at this time. Jim was a good man. It was a great pleasure and privilege to cross paths with Jim professionally, and he made an enormous contribution to the vocational education sector.

Our professional paths first crossed when Jim worked at Tranzqual and subsequently we often shared a seat on the bus back to Petone. In that time we managed to solve many of the challenges facing the tertiary vocation sector. If only someone would listen! Jim was an incredibly strategic thinker, of the highest integrity and a damn nice guy. NZ is a poorer place with his parting, but, he made a difference while he was with us. Pocivaj u miru
