James COLLINGE Obituary

With regret that I am unable to attend Jim's farewell service, I must express my deep and fond memory of Jim as Director of the Stout Research Centre in the early 1990s. At a time when I was experiencing personal stress, he warmly welcomed me as a resident, offering support, both material and moral. His kindness and courtesy, his dedication not to personal advancement but to making the Stout a hub of industry and constructive friendships will be remembered by others who benefitted from his vision. He provided a model for Directors coming after. My condolences to his family.

I was a very anxious mature student when I first encountered the "dynamic duo" of Jim and Jack Shallcrass. Jim brought humour, kindness and Herbert Read, Jack brought the rest! They were a source of endless encouragement and I am always in their debt. Thank you you for sharing Jim with us all these years. He was a special person. I am only sorry that I have to be out of town this week and cannot grieve with you in person.
