Dear Joanne and whanau
I am deeply saddened to hear about Jack's recent death- sending you blessings with much aroha. He will be irreplaceable and you both were such a positive influence on my life back in those heady 1970s. We did catch up at Fran's funeral - he seemed just the same - a fully human wise man, capable of great love, laughter and leadership. May he rest in peace and spread his infectious humour in any afterlife he may come across! Madeleine Burdon

Arohanui, Our thoughts and spirits are with you all. Jack and Joanne walked the hills of Scotland and laughed with Tony and Cristall on Lismore, they will be waiting to celebrate Jacks next journey with a wee dram. Even though Jack left Featherston his spirit always rested here.

"Kua Hinga He Totara I Te Wao Nui a Tane"
Moe mai ra i te Rangatira o to whanau Doherty, me te whanau whanui o Te Wakaiti.
Takoto mai e Haki, I to moengaroa, moe mai i roto i nga ringaringa o Te Atua, hoki atu to wairua i te taha o to tipuna, ki Hawaiki nui, Hawaiki roa, Hawaiki pamamao, haere, haere, haere atu ra, e moe e hoa.
Ki te Whanau Kirimate e Joanne me to tamariki mokopuna hoki, he tino pouri nei, kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui, ka aroha mai ano...ka nui taku aroha kia koutou katoa .
Nga mihi

On the border of Cameroon the Benue River cuts through the granite mountains into this fertile valley in Nigeria, it spreads into the wide savannah grasslands and this is where I weep.
And the river passing Hiruharama will roll on and Tauherenikau and all the rivers heading to the ocean where Jack has gone now.
How truly blessed we have been. I got the shot glass full of Jack and I have cherished the many ways I was ignited, cherished, challenged, and accepted in the whanau.
That rocket fuel has taken me a long way from home but never far from love and humour, never far from social justice and the active activism of a life in service.
Arohanui ki a koutou, ki te whanau whanui i tenei wa pouri nui.
And I set off now, before sunrise to teach with some farmers' children in their mother tongue.
Moe Mai Tai Matua Jack.
