I was thinking about lovely Dr Milne delivering my son Jack in Lower Hutt in 2001. Jack ended up being Ian´s last baby delivery in his official baby delivering capacity. Jack is soon to turn 21 and is a fine young man now. Dr Milne was my GP also and was the first doctor to ever ask me what I thought might be wrong with my child when he was sick. (Pneumonia) it was a tricky one.
I still regard him very highly and thank him for being such a great caring doctor and a special guy.
Deepest condolences to the Milne family. K Wright

Our deepest sympathises to Janet and the other members of the Milne family. It is with truly great sadness that I read of Ian's passing. As my doctor, as an amazing friend to our mutual friend Roger (who will be delighted to have another saint crewing a heavenly yacht - I am sure they are there!) as a significant `pillar´ in the Petone community, as a kayaking buddy, as a voice of wisdom and reflection, as the bearer of a gentle and yet mischievous smile, as the one with the encouraging word, as an encourager and facilitator of community, as a person with such a genuine interest in another person´s wellbeing - Ian will be hugely missed. In recent weeks I have often wanted to just pop in and hear his reflections on what is happening in the world and hear his quiet, considered wisdom. For me, Petone is a village with a gentle pace of life. It is a place of creativity, diversity, and community. A significant presence and voice in that community is no longer with us. He will be greatly missed. I thank the Lord for his influence.

Dear Kiri and whanau.
I doubt you remember me Kiri but we went to college together at WGC. My sister saw your dads wonderful write up on stuff and let me know your sad news. Losing a dad is hard. I'm coming up on 11 months since my dad passed and I miss him each day.
Please accept my condolences for you and your whole family at this hard and sad time.

Dear Janet, Jonathon, Kiri, Anita, Frances and Steuart
Our deepest sympathies in the loss of such a wonderful husband father grandfather brother friend and family physician. It is very obvious to us that he was surrounded by a loving community that he enjoyed serving.
We feel very blessed to call Janet and Ian our friends since Dec 1981 when I did a locum so they could take a well deserved break.
I was very young and inexperienced but 18 months later when I got home to Canada I knew I needed to find people like Ian Milne to work with as business partners. He was an excellent diagnostician, always compassionate, kind and an incredible listener. He made business decisions based on best patient care and not based on remuneration. He was a lifelong learner. We admire him immensely.
We very much enjoyed the funeral and feel lucky that we could watch it from Ontario Canada where we are still covered in snow.

Dear Janet and family - with my loving, heartfelt sympathy to you all on the passing of a wonderful husband and father. I have so many fond memories of my time as receptionist on the staff of Petone Medical Centre during the 1980's and 1990's - some of the best few years of my life.
Ian was a loyal, enthusiastic and fully-involved member of the Petone community, who always wanted the best life possible for everybody. Not just for his patients, but for others as well.
I'm sure he was widely appreciated for his skills, his kind but no-nonsense attitude, and above all, for his modesty and unassuming manner. His compassionate, generous spirit will be remembered with gratitude by people far further afield than his beloved Petone for many years to come. His influence will live on.
With much love, Noeline Francis

What a shock, he appeared so fit when we took groups of school kids around Matiu. His quiet understated magic holding the children's attention, and wise savvy counsel on the Eastbourne Forest Rangers governance is irreplaceable. Heartfelt condolences Janet and whanau.

We are all so grateful to have had Ian as part of our lives. For the obvious support as a GP/obstetrician in caring for us all through my five pregnancies and deliveries and thereafter, and also as a neighbour in Graham St for so many years.
He was such a kind doctor. I still remember him carrying a nine-year-old Bevan back to the car when he knew that Bevan needed to be referred to hospital for what turned out to be osteomyelitis. Another memory is of his obvious happiness and joy at having been present for Naomi's home birth in December 1991. He was so pleased to have returned from the family tramp around Lake Waikaremoana in time for her arrival. Graham St was widened that year and the roading contractors had just poured the last piece of concrete in the footpath before finishing work and Ian didn't notice the road cones as he walked back home in the early afternoon. If you look carefully, you can still see his footprints in the footpath outside number 5 Graham St.
We are all so sad at Ian's sudden passing. We'll miss his wisdom and sense of humour.

Janet and family it was such a shock to hear the news, and a huge loss to the community and me personally.
As my GP, a good friend, and a great tramping buddy we wore several hats together.
My best wishes to you all, I am sorry the little Covid critter gets in the way of being there personally to farewell a warm and caring man

Kia Ora Janet and whanau. I was so saddened to hear of Ian´s sudden death. I worked with him when he locumed for us at Muritai Health Centre and more recently when he joined our Covid vaccinating team in Lower Hutt. Ian also delivered my younger two sons. He always remembered Vincent´s birthday and age as he was born at 4am on the morning that Ian ran his first half marathon. I was amazed when one day at work he reminded of Vin´s upcoming birthday. I feel privileged to have known this remarkable, kind, generous gentleman. He will be sorely missed. RIP dear Ian.

I am very saddened to hear or Dr Ians' unexpected passing. He was our family Doctor from 1997 until his retirement and also in his locum times. He was so helpful, considerate and emphatic to our family's complicated health issues. Saying a lot, but we are still alive and mostly sane due to his doctoring, Dr Ian will also be missed for his community work and the wisdom he shared to all. Heartfelt best wishes to Dr Janet, Dr Ian's whanau, Petone Medical staff and patients and the wider Petone Community. A huge loss indeed. RIL Dr Ian Milne
