I can just very much echo Derek's message below. Fred was a man who stood no nonsense but never let that get in the way of his warm, funny, welcoming manner. He believed that if a thing was worth doing, it was worth doing well, which no doubt led him to his success in the world of athletics administration. I can only say thank you for his many kindnesses in my formative years, and express my sincere condolences to Christine, Martin, Helen and their families.

I'm so sorry to hear of Fred's passing. I had the pleasure of knowing him since Martin was running laps around Tawhero St. A practical man and always with a quip or kind word. He ensured Martin was raised knowing how to hammer a nail straight, and more than once we'd come around to pick-up Martin for a beach visit or the like, only to find Martin on the roof, under the guidance of Fred, acquiring skills that would serve him better than a tan in later life. I have fond memories of time spent at Fred's place, being bowled by Martin, enjoying Christine's great baking, and having lively banter with Fred who always took an interest in Martin's friends. A generous man with a great smile - my thoughts are with Christine, Martin, Helen and their families.
