I came across that wonderful clip of Elaine talking about her motor scooter adventures in Hanoi and was very sad to hear from the church that I missed saying hello after all these years only by a matter of months. Elaine was my French teacher at Te Aroha College and my neighbour. Easily the most memorable and caring teacher I ever had. My heart goes out to Naomi and all the family.

Deeply saddened to hear of Elaine's passing. She was a most inspirational woman and teacher, and the one who told me I most assuredly was not going to take the soft option of going to the University of Waikato when my future lay in Auckland. She opened my mind, my world, and I never looked back. I still put her French lessons into practice, and the life lessons too. My sympathies to Matthew, Naomi, Robert and the wider family.

Elaine was one of my more memorable school teachers. She taught me French for 5 years.
I have this lasting image of her wearing yellow plastic roman sandals to class. She really tried hard to teach us the French for above and below. She would say dessous and dessus over and over again and we would try not to look confused. Elaine took our class to New Caledonia which was quite an adventure.
It was good to see Elaine at the 2007 Te Aroha College reunion. She still had that big smile.
My condolences to Robert, Naomi and Matthew.

Elaine used to brighten our day at Thorndon New World. Always smiling, always chatty and so bright. She will be missed, especially by the checkout staff.
