Back in 1999 I put a post on Student Job Search for a "handy person". Dougal, who was a 7th former at Boys High at the time, answered the add. Dougal has left a life long impression on me as having such an amazing character and integrity. I followed his life, particularly around his sporting achievements and where he headed after Med school. The article in last week's Press gave an outline of Dougal's life. The fact that he was a GP in Porirua came as no suprise. I read of his death with sadness and I struggled to understand how someone so good and so talented and with so much to give could be so troubled. My sincere condolences to Dougal's family and particularly to his girls. I hope they get to know how special their Dad was.

Dougal, one of the most beautiful people I've ever met in this life time. I remember you treating my boys and I with the up most care, compassion and sincerity. You were professional and intuitive all at once. You treated my hand with delicacy as you checked it and showed so much sympathy that it made everything feel like it started healing instantly. You made my children laugh when they were sick and you always spoke words of life over our situation. I adore your wife and children for standing by you and I thank you for sacrificing your time and energy for the rest of us. You're one of the most hard working people I know. I'll miss seeing you bike past us, waving and smiling. I'm certain the world will never be the same again without your smile. Rest in Peace Dr Thorburn, may your family be comforted by God's angels and may a peace that surpasses all understanding be present in your home.

I had the pleasure of racing with and against Dougal from primary school through highschool, he was the epitome of excellence with an unshakeable faith. A real inspiration and role model for all who encountered him. Gone far too soon, my condolences to his family and friends.

I am saddened to hear the news of Dougal's passing. It was always a delight to share in his athletic achievements. His run to enter Guinness Book of World Records with daughter Audrey at Outram in 2012 was epic. My thoughts and prayers go to his family to help guide them through this difficult time.
