the first time we met David was in Auckland in 1972. even though David wasn't Jewish (his grandfather was a Jew from Turkey named Mizrahi) he was very close to the Jewish community of Auckland and we became close friends. i remember vividly the beautiful wedding of David and Shirley. it was end of 1974 beginning of 1975. we plan a visit to NZ in Jan 2023 and i looked for their address and got a shock to find out that David passed away in 2019. a great loss. we remember David as a happy and talented person with a great voice. will cherish his memory. ofra & shimon givon - israel

I first met Dave in 1988, during my first expedition in northern Victoria Land. In the following years we met in several symposium in New Zealand, Usa and elsewhere. I always remember his enthusiasm and his personality: he was really a gentleman

The news took me by surprise last week as I had hoped David was off to more singing, to tasting new food and wine and speaking Italian with people around the table as he did with me many times. I will always remember his kindness and joviality. My sincere condolences.

Dave toting a muscovite-rich 'Swedish granite' to my school turned me on to the beauty of Mother Earth and the tantalizing questions she poses, helping to frame my career - Thank you Dave!

We also shared the best steak & kidney pie ever on a field trip in a Truckies Caff en route to North Devon!

I'd run into David mainly by referencing publications of his as an undergraduate studying in the '90s, but later on, in the early 2000's, he was my external examiner for my PHD. His attention to detail was very gruelling, in a five hour oral examination which tested every aspect of my geological education. Worth it, though. Later on in life, I had occasion to work with him several times here at GNS Science, and he was always unfailingly pleasant to work with, widely read and meticulous in his science, and keen in his hobbies and interests.

He was a kind man and a gentleman and made valued contributions to the Geosciences community. Outside of work, I particularly enjoyed seeing him perform in Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Kind regards, Susan

My early impressions of David, during our first Antarctic geological & survey field trip together, were as an enthusiastic & talented opera singer; our huskies soon caught on and began giving us their own tuneful rendition every evening. I then realised he was opening my eyes to the geology surrounding us. This later led on to great discussions on volcanoes and on the even more important facets of life. I will miss his wide interests & knowledge, and his cheerfulness at our OAE reunions. Thank you David.

I well recall as a student the expedition to the lava cave at the back of his Landscape Road property. And the summer season where I assisted him with field work in the Coromandel, working from a caravan at Hahei.
David was an assiduous and thorough geologist, leaving no stream untraversed and no rock unturned. Always cheerful, always patient. His passing is a great loss -not only to geology, but more so to his family, who in the end are what matters most. My sincere condolences to all. Roger Evans

I first met Dave when I was an undergraduate in Geology at Queen's University Belfast. I took him on a field trip to Slieve Gullion in the SW Mournes. We next met in Antarctica in 1981/82 and joined forces with Fred Davy and Stuart Henrys to edit the Proceedings volume for the Antarctic Earth Sciences meeting in 2000. Sad to see you go Dave, singing all the way.

I recall with pleasure the many conversations David and I had at Geoscience Society of NZ Annual Conferences, particularly the one I co-convened in Oamaru in 2009. I know I will feel there is an unfilled hole at similar future meetings.
