David and my lives intersected over the years. From a fresher at Otago - Carrington Hall to a flat mate in Agnew Street. Through to meeting him at a yacht club in Wellington prior to him going to the West Coast - doctoring. I did stay with him and his father in Wellington Road house overnight. And then we re-established contact across the ditch over the last years. He was a valued adviser when I faced cancer treatment and was always keen, enthusiastic, professional and above all a real friend. On the other hand I like to think that in our most recent times I gave him a different window into another world and positivity.
David will be remembered for his support to many people, his advice, his keen love of life and people, his enthusiasm and above all his delight in continuing to learn new things. We all age but to me David was timeless in his essential nature. WE will all remember David's words of support and advice gathered from years of living in the real world. David Loeber sent me a lovely letter in 2007, thanking me for an obituary I had written for a dental journal about his father Cyril. I purchased the dental practice that had first been established by Cyril, with his mother, a nurse, also running the practice for some years. David recalled his father teaching him to swage crowns out of gold plate, and make porcelain jacket crowns in a furnace. He rigged up an electric train controller to silver plate dental dies, which they used. He recalled his father buying a then state of the art dental handpiece and using it on him as a first patient. Although I never met David, the letter read kindly of a time in his life which had some special memories for him. Those were difficult times to be a health professional. He was clearly academically gifted and had great promise as a young man. There was a gentleness and honesty in his letter.

Thank you for being a significant part of our lives. We remember your kindness, advice and humour. When time goes by we will remember you as always being present through the hard times, sharing the good times. Thank you for being you. Rest in peace now from pain and worry. Go well David.
