I met Colleen as a fellow student at Wellington Teachers' College in the 1960's, then in Kelburn. We were in the same tutorial group based at Kowhai: the top site of a sprawling 'campus'. She lived on the same street as a maternal uncle and passed on both his regards and his desire to see me. I remember her for her kindness and understanding of my early loss: Mother at the age of eleven. Thank you for the many conversations as we prepared for our respective teaching careers.
And then there was the music which was to come to my attention a little later.

So sad to hear of your death Colleen. I was there when your father brought you your first violin. I loved the musical evenings where we sang `you are my sunshine` then off to bed while others of the musical neighbours, the Ashes and Ramptons of Albert Street carried on the party. I loved having you as my first playmate in Island Bay and always enjoyed music with you all. Very talented family. My Dad played Banjo and Mum sang.So many memories and you were so very successful and so talented. Well done Colleen you have given so many much joy. Farewell my first and oldest friend.

Like most people, I first saw Colleen with the Hamilton County Blue Grass Band (a bit later than most as I only came to NZ in 1987). Later she was my daughter's violin/fiddle tutor on Kapiti Coast. What a great musician and also a wonderful person.

An amazing person who spent her time on the planet selflessly giving to others. A life of service in the fullest sense. An inspiration. A mentor. A gold standard of how one can live a life. A privilege to have met her, to have known her, and to have learned so much about life from her. And to have learned violin from her.

I am sad to hear of your passing. I always watched when possible The Hamilton Blue Grass Band, because I knew you were in it. I remember you from many years ago when we went to Girls Brigade in Island Bay Wellington. You were always kind and understanding. You helped so many people in life. You can now rest in peace.

I have so many fond memories of Colleen and The Hamilton County Bluegrass Band from the first time they played at The Balladeer and introduced me to music that rattled my Celtic roots! You made a difference Colleen and left your mark. RIP. With love, Lesley

The most extraordinary teacher, musician, mentor, and friend I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Your encouragement and support is something I'll hold onto forever. I'll be thinking of you every time I pick our favourite tune "Angeline The Baker."
