To my dear Uncle Charlie, my deepest condolences to Aunty Gwen and your family. You have always been a fountain of knowledge regarding our Young Clan and it was so good talking to you about things I did not understand about our family. You are already sorely missed, but rest in peace and thank you for the great contribution you have made for the Chinese Community in Wellington.

Uncle Charlie was a memorable character in our extended family. I enjoyed how he wa very opinionated about everything from food to basketball, he was articulate in how he expressed himself around certain topics, and always with a fun sense of humor.

I did have the privilege of going back to China with him and Auntie Gwen over 20 years ago, what a great way to be introduced to my extended family.

He really loved visiting China and told me stories about fleeing home when the Japanese were invading. I think he was only 7 or 8 years old.

He´s very proud of where we came from and with an extended family of over 300 it was quite an accomplishment for us to have a family reunion. Such a visionary and well done to his family for making it happen.

I personally have enjoyed my connection with his Uncle Charlie over the years, a pillar of our community which extended throughout his family.

Lots of love to Aunty Gwen, Mal, Warren, Jacks & Fi. ( and families) Xxx

He left a big footprint that would be hard to follow for the young people of today. Left school at 13 (that was life for Chinese of the Old), he managed to do a lot in Wellington. In those times, he owned fruit shops, magazine/food bar, restaurants, a supermarket and much more well into early age 70s. He even managed to create a printed book documenting his brothers and sisters, their families and families in the "Young Family History...", in quite great detail. Through his huge efforts, the Wellington Chinese Sports/Cultural Centre was built. A remarkable man. Condolence to the Gwen Young, children Malcolm, Warren, Jackie & Carolyn & families.
