I remember Charlie Jelley from 50 years ago now, when I was growing up in Tawa in the early 60's. He did a lot of work in the evenings for anyone who wanted to improve their running. I still remember the early morning runs to Glenside before school and work, and the Sunday morning runs to Colonial Knob and to Johnsonville. He provided great support and what is now called mentoring for young men growing up, and I am still grateful to have known him and to have been helped by him. He was a stalwart of the Olympic Harrier Club. Live in peace!

We, his brothers and sisters, grieve the passing of our oldest sibling Charl, who right through his childhood was the voice of reason. He looked after me when I had been crying (which was often), and led the way into earning some wages to help the family income. The attached photo shows him at the age of about 9, consoling me in typical fashion.
