Terribly sorry to hear this. I had not been in touch with Ben for many years, but have fond recollections of him as a fellow PhD student in Melbourne in the late 1990s. A wonderfully warm yet quietly spoken friend and colleague. Deepest sympathies to Lis and children.

The gathering at the National Portrait Gallery evoked the essence of Ben, bounded by respect and aroha in a wondrous and fitting way. Beautiful man. Vale Ben.

I´m so very very saddened to hear this Lis and whanau.

I have the most beautiful memories of Ben as my lecturer at Vic Uni. He was such an incredible historian and human and I learnt so much from him.

On a personal note, I also remember when I had a pretty bad car crash ... so I missed my exam and it struck me how caring and kind he was ... and even followed up to make sure I was ok.

Thank you for bringing so much to this world Ben and again, my sincerest condolences.

Cll Advocates

April 24, 2024

Ben, a founding trustee of CLL Advocates and fervent supporter of CLL patients, committed himself to advocating for treatments and support despite his own battle with the disease.
He spearheaded multiple initiatives, such as organising marches on Parliament, presenting petitions, and addressing committees to advocate for improved funding and processes for CLL treatments. His efforts demanded both bravery and expertise, and his unwavering moral support was invaluable to the cause, earning lasting gratitude from the CLL Advocates community.
We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to his family.

I was working for Housing New Zealand when Ben was researching for his book 'We Call it Home', and I was doing some research on the history of Point Chevalier. We exchanged several emails swapping information, research hints etc. His encouragement and positivity were appreciated and have been long remembered.
