Janet and Mel Tyson

One of our favourite memories of Barbara, which she herself saw the humour in, is the time that she - as a good neighbour - was looking after another Macaulay Street house while its occupants were away. When the burglar alarm went off, she rang the help number which was answered, unbeknown to her, from Australia. The call taker said, "what state are you in?" to which Barbara at first answered, "very agitated".

Our memory is of Barbara as a wonderful neighbour. When we moved to Macaulay Street in 1982 we knew both Gordon and Barbara as some of the very good neighbours in that little street. In 2001, when Mel's newly widowed mother Gloria (known as Lil) came up from Christchurch to live next door to us, they helped her settle in. Barbara became a very good friend, with the two of them enjoying Senior Citizens outings, including some trips away from Wellington. They shared a love of knitting and of cats! As Lil's health deteriorated Barbara remained a great support to her. We are very grateful to Barbara for how she helped Lil make and enjoy the big move to life in Wellington.
