A. FLORENCE Obituary
FLORENCE, Dr A. Leslie:
19 October 1927 – 26 March 2018
Our dad, Dr A. Leslie Florence, died at Rotorua Hospital in the early morning of Monday 26 March. A private cremation was held on Tuesday 27 March. Dearly loved by Sandy and Sandra Florence (Taupo); Gill Rutherford (Dunedin); Suzy and Frank Wells (Invercargill/Niue); grandchildren Kate and Maddie, Dan and Tim; and Dora Florence (former wife, Invercargill). Messages to Sandy Florence, 1080 Mapara Rd, RD5, Taupo 3385. Thank you. Born on the other side of the world in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, he moved through life in his own distinctive way. Known and respected by patients as "Dr Florence – such a good GP," dad's thoroughness and acumen were evident in a letter published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) on 31 December, 1960. Based on dad's observations of the side effects of Distaval on his patients, Is thalidomide to blame? questioned the use of this drug by pregnant women. His putting pen to paper resulted in the Federal Drug Administration's rejection of the pharmaceutical company's application to market thalidomide in the US. Dad's words in 1960 made a difference in many lives then, and have reached far into the years beyond. 'Grip fast,' the motto of dad's Clan Leslie, is a fitting description of dad's nature. Ever determined, dad was deeply kind, generous, thoughtful and understanding (despite the occasional disagreements with people). He gave us invaluable opportunities to learn, play and experience the world, which in turn opened up possibilities in our lives, for which we are hugely thankful. We are also grateful to dad's steadfast friends, whose companionship, care and humour brightened his life. Thanks also to the superb care offered by staff of Wharerangi in Taupo. Knowing dad was loved beyond his family is a real comfort. It's impossible to capture the heart of dad's life – to do justice to the medical and personal contributions he offered throughout his life. We can simply honour, respect and remember his good heart and deeds. We have been well blessed.
