Belated condolences to the McGrath family. John was Solicitor-General for most of the time I was Commissioner of Inland Revenue and I felt privileged to have his advice on a range of difficult issues. Competence and kindness sums up my memories of him. I am sorry that I was unable to attend his memorial service.

It was very saddening and surprising to learn of John's death today, having studied with him in the 1960s and being in partnership in the 1970s, as well as continuing to have a working relationship when he was solicitor-general. He was a lovely man and my heart goes out to his family.

I was very saddened to learn of John's death. In the 1980s when I was on the Medical Council of NZ, he was the Legal Assessor and made a tremendous contribution to modernizing its legal functions.

Dear Caroline, heartfelt thoughts to you and your family on the death of your brother John. Siblings are so much part of our lives over time. When they us leave us the gap is big when they are no longer there.

So sad to hear of the passing of a true gentleman. Loved working for John when he was barrister back in the 80s and have such fond memories at the Top of the Terrace when I was part of the Concept team and we shared office space with John and worked for him. Condolences Chris to you and your family at this sad time. Alice Forster

My deepest sympathy to Sir John's family. While at the NZ High Commission in Ottawa I had the honour to accompany John during a visit to Canada when he was Solicitor-General - I learned a lot in a few short days!! Have always enjoyed meeting up with him again. A kind and brilliant man who will be greatly missed.
